1. Animals certainly have feelings, moods, and emotions

2. They can also be VERY sensitive to the feeling of humans, but it depends on the animal, and it's familiarity with humans.

I doubt your kitten has enough experiance to be all that sensitive. As far as rubbing your legs, cats just do this. Kittens, adults, all cats. Mostly, it is one of a couple of ways they use to mark territory. (you KNOW the other one!) Also, some cats, especially pet house cats, simply demand attention. They do it for themselves, not for the human.

As far as responding to our emotions, I believe most pets understand their owner's feelings and intentions as much, if not more than their owner's words. Many dogs, for instance "get it" during training because they are just that clever. In other words, they learn to fetch, during play, long before they associate the word, "fetch" with the action. Same for sit, beg, heel. Associating the word comes later in the learning process.

A dog also can detect a person's mood and can respond. Very often, the response is appropriate. Sometimes not. But they respond. How they act is something they must learn. They don't instinctively know.

I believe cats are just as intelligent and just as sensitive. However, their traits, throught breeding are not the same as a dog's. A cat, for example, may know when it's owner is angry and avoid the owner, perhaps hiding or leaving the house. I don't believe a cat is capable of displaying "affection" in the same way a dog does.

Oh I have to disagree with LisaT!! Some cats and dogs do know when you're upset and they may not exactly be trying to comfort you but they will be close by which in itself can be comforting. When my husband had double pneumonia 1 of our cats was at his side constantly either on the bed, on the floor beside the couch or at his feet if he was up and sitting in a chair. He only left my husband's side to eat and do his toilette. Also, cats purr when they are frightened or in pain, it's not just a pleasure response.

This is going to be a matter of opinion, with some dog and cat owners swearing that pets can tell your emotions and all that. I don't think they can, unless you are so upset that you have not fed them. It sounds heartless but pets do not have complex emotional intelligence. If they are rubbing up against you, it is for their own biological instinct, like to put their scent on you, or for some other physical reason. Cats purr when they are free from physical need or discomfort. It doesn't mean you can't enjoy it, but I don't think we can make it more than it is.

Well, I think they have feelings; my older cat gets miffed if I pet the young guy first; and he's always there when I'm unhappy; if I'm annoyed with my husband, he bites him (hubby) in the knee. He also chose that same husband for me: climbed in his lap and went to sleep on our first 'at home' date - he'd never done that before in the 2 years he had then, or since in the 9 years he has now. They really do tune in to your feelings. If you're happy, they play and skitter around, if you're stressed, they'll stay out of your way - and if you're sad, they'll be there with comfort.

Yes they can tell. My cousin had a german shephard who sat each day by the kitchen window to wait for him. You always knew when my cousin was in a bad mood, the dog would jump of the kitchen chair and ran in the living room hiding behind the drapes before he even entered the house. On good days he would jump and run to the front door, it was funny. I think the must have seen by the expression on the face. My daughter in laws cat knew after she had a misscarriage, he would lay by her side and wouldn't leave. She always says he was a great comfort to her.

Yes, then can know your feelings! and Yes the have feelings just like we do. Just bring your dog a new bone and see how happy he is! Once I was crying so hard, my dog started crying too! Some dogs starve themselves when their owner dies because they are so sad. All animals have feelings, we're animals too you know!

Their feelings aren't as complex as what we have, but it does seem that cats and dogs are able to tell when their owner is upset.

Yeah, my cat AND my fennec fox know.
My can will sit on my lap and purr when I'm sad. She does this EVERY TIME. And my fox will rup her nose against me and just kind of... smile. Animals can sense emotions, just like they say animals can "sense fear." You've heard of that before, right?

Yes they can, and my cat and dog do the same thing that your kitten does. Especially my dog, he'll even get in my lap and try to lick my face if he senses that i'm really upset and crying. =)
