I don't know about pain medication, but they will give you an anti-inflammatory medication which will help it. I just took the anti-inflammatory and some OTC pain reliever. Mine was in my hand so I wore a brace which helped.

Best is to ask your doctor.
I had tendonitis in my Achilles tendon (OUCH), and the thing that helped most was anything anti-inflammatory, since tendonitis is ultimately just that: inflammation. Inflammation goes away, pain goes away.
Physical therapy included ultrasound massages, stretching, ice, more massages.
The important thing about tendonitis is that it's progressive. The more you stress it, the more it's going to get worse... the more risk you have of permanent damage (I can never ice skate again).

On the flip side, if you're asking about narcotics, that's up to your doctor. I kind of doubt it, since tendonitis needs a lot of rest to heal, and most narcotics make you not care about the pain, so you risk inflicting more pain and ultimately making the problem worse.
Marijuana has been shown to help reduce inflammation, if you are for that. Personally, I'm allergic to it, so I don't know if it works for tendonitis.
Also, evening primrose oil is definitely good for inflammation. 1000 mg per day softgel. Doesn't taste bad, and is pretty inexpensive at Vitamin World.

Hope this helps.

They usually give inflammatory for tendinitis. They might prescribe a pain medication for a few days, but not usually.
