I know there was a very bad movie made in the 80's where some guy kept having his fire stomped out by the same rhino no matter where he was. ( I think that was the only real funny part of the movie except for him hanging his jeep in a tree by the winch). Other than that, here's what I've found.
Q: Do rhinos really stomp out fires?
A:There are quite a number of legends about the rhinoceros stamping out fire. The story seems to have been common in Malaysia and Burma.
This type of rhinoceros even had a special name in Malay, 'badak api', where badak means rhinoceros and api means fire. The animal would come when a fire is lit in the forest and stamp it out.
If there is or can be any truth in the legend, it would be hard to decide. Suffice it to say that there has been no sighting of this phenomenon in recent history.
Of course, the rhinoceros in South East Asia has become very rare is hardly ever met nowadays, as it keeps to the deep forest and high mountains.

First, the movie referenced above was, "The Gods Must Be Crazy". It stars a real-life Kalahari bushman, Nixau. Funny. Worth getting the DVD.
Second the rhino "firefighting" has been shown twice on film; first was "Gods" and second was an unrelated documentary that I cannot recall. Also, the rhino's talent was shown on "The Simpson's" episode that features the "Canyonaro".
Lastly, my uncle who was a world traveler, told me the story of rhino's putting out fires when I was very small sometime around 1956. He got the story from his dad, my grandfather, who fought in the Boar wars and saw it happen in person.

The movie "The Gods Must Be Crazy" is a very low budget looking movie, but it isn't a bad movie, it's actually quite funny and was kind of groundbreaking at the time. It broke all box office records for a foreign film released in the United States.

It is true. I have seen it happen twice in my life, during my time in The Peace Corps serving in the Kalahari, and surrounding areas.
