If you know the basics of how music is created then you will be able to perform better. For instance with music theory, you learn all of the scales, the different intervals of each scale, etc., this will help you be able to identify what scale it is just by hearing it (with lots of practice of course). If you are playing an instrument in a group it will help you be able to tune, not just your individual note but all of the notes in that scale, which will help make everything sound better. Overall learning the basics help you be a better performer.
