It's not always easy to differentiate between ear mites and an infection. Some clues are black discharge if they are mites and usually you will see you cat nearly hurt themselves digging at the ear because of the discomfort. A veterinary researcher once infected himself with earmites to gauge the degree of discomfort and found it was like having brittle leaves being rustled in your ear continually! No wonder it drives cats so beserk.

Usually a tell-tale sign of infection is a yeasty smell emanating from the ear. (ear mites haven't a smell).

If it's ear mites, most vets do a course of Ivermectin, and usually this is administered over two visits.

If it is an infection, there are antibiotic drops that are usually prescribed. As well, you vet might recommend Oti-Cleanse to give the ear a good cleansing before antibiotics are inserted.

First stop would be to take your cat to the vet and have your cat checked out.It sounds more like a skin infection rather than an ear infection though.

Take him to the vet in a week if it continues. Give yourself time to see if the drops work or not. Maybe he just has dry skin. Hard to tell sometimes.

A local vet would be able to tell you what's right. It may cost you, but this is a living, breathing part of this world, and he/she must be taken care of properly. If you love your cat, you can do better than ask people on YAnswers.
