you might have HAD an ear piercing infection without even knowing it! you say you hadn't taken out the earings i a couple of months right? well, you've probably heard what happens with an ear piercing infection, when you take out your earrings theres a yellow crust on the earring. that happens with an ear piercign infection. when you have that, ur supposed to take out ur earings daily and clean them + ur ears until the infection clears up.if you didn't the yellow stuff (the infection) would be building and building up in ur ear piercing! so of course, then, if u took it out, it would smell. since u mentioned ur ear piercing, this is what i assume. but of course, i could be wrong, and if ur more concerned, consult ur doctor. hope this helps!
btw, just read ur additional details now, there isn't always red or swelling in an ear infection. sometimes there isn't even pain!

Its a combination between hair products and oil, sweat, dead skin cells and any other outside dusts and bacteria that gets in there. Also know as 'ear cheese', the smell is reduced by cleaning your pierced areas regularly even after they are healed. (Sorry, drawing a blank on the technical name)
It is not harmful unless its a fresh piercing or NEVER cleaned, just kind of gross. This smell is often and almost always worse in larger gauge earrings. I have 00g, 2g, 6g in my lobes, so yeah, the smell gets bad sometimes. Just take out the jewelry in the shower or after and clean it with some alcohol. Gently rub your lobes (or other areas) with a damp cloth and rinse with warm water and mild soap. If the smell is still bad even cleaning daily, sea salt soaks will dry up the oils a bit. IF the pericings are fully healed, you can use alcohol or peroxide in SMALL amounts to clean it as well. But if drying of the skin/peeling skin/cracked skin occurs, switch back to sea salt soaks.

Yes, bacteria causes the stink.
Just cleanse your ear holes with alcohol everytime you use earrings.

YEAST IN THE EAR. ITS TRUE YOUR EAR CAN DEPOSIT RESIDUE THAT TURNS INTO YEAST. (NOT AN YEAST INFECTION KIND)
EAR YEAST, IT'S BACTERIA
BEST THING A GOOD EAR CLEANER OR ALCOLO WILL DRY THE EARS AND HELP THE INFECTION IF THERE IS ONE. WATER IT DOWN THOUGH.
