The way I was taught to do it in APA style is if it is a direct quote using " then you use the author's last name, date, pg #.

When you use the information in your own words (paraphrasing) it is just the authors last name and the date.

You should check the writing center at your school to find out exactly how it should be since there are many different styles. or ask your teacher since they know what they want.

its acutually if you use more than one resource for it you would in partneese put the authors last name then the page number like


"The best times is in high school" (Smith 30). You dont put a comma between the last name and the page number and the puntuation like the period goes at the end of the quotes like in my example.

Citation format is determined by citation style you are using throughout your paper. So, this is you initial point - APA, MLA, Harvard, etc. citation style - each of those requires a different format of referencing and in-text citing.
