When they're ready. Some people get used to being fat, it becomes part of their identity being a big guy or girl and for some it's all they've ever known. They may be apprehensive about what could happen if they drop the weight. They may be apprehensive about the tremendous effort it will take and having to part with their eating habits. They may have serious psychological problems such as child sexual abuse or a binge eating problem standing in the way of their losing weight. Different people different issues. The important thing is, skinny or fat, we treat our fellow human beings with dignity even if we don't always agree with their lifestyle choices.

Do you think that a fat person is happy with his o her body?
Of course not, but it's not that easy.
Some have other medical problems that make losing weight almost impossible. The age is another one.
But mostly is the habit, if this person has always been overweight he eats a lot of processed foods, sweets, greasy stuff, like fast foods. For example: intead of eating a slice of pizza, he os he eats haalf a pizza, and instead of just a can of soda, he drinks a pint or more maybe a family size one.
Two o three hamburguers, and a big size pack of french fries.

That would require a major lifestyle change that most people aren't willing to make. Besides, no one makes it easy for them when they do try. They are giggled at, ignored completely, harassed, pointed at, and worst of all--expected to fail. They are constantly being lied to about how to help themselves by doctors and corporations who are more interested in profits than in saving and improving lives. People are being told that things that would actually help them are dangerous or even life threatening. And because of all the deception they won't believe the simple truth--that it takes hard work and determination to become fit after being obese. That's not easy for someone who's self esteem is ruined.

You're right. There is a big obesity problem in USA. It's all of our fast food chains and meat-eating. If our whole county was vegitarian we would all be a healthy weight. Fat people just hate giving up the pork. Heart Desease (caused by obesity) kills more people than cigarettes.

Obesity is a result of learned bad habits, and habits are very hard to change, especially when you've been raised to behave that way. Thats why so many people are obese.

Its a lot harder to lose a lot of weight. Plus, they eat more and would have to cut back. It seems impossible to them, they get depressed and its a never ending cycle. You never know what it's like to be in someone else's shoes, so don't be quick to judge!
