This is just something I was told, and I want to know if it's true. For starters, I will not change my religion, so don't bother asking me to.

My question is this. I heard that the Qua'ran was written in two different periods of Mohhamad's life. The first part, the one that talks about Jihad and death to all unbelievers, was when Mohhamad was at war and in the beginning of his ministry. The second part was written while he was at peace and talks about peace.

Is this true? If so, then that means that the extremists are only following half of their prophet's teachings, right?

The Quran was revealed for 23 years continusly. Some people misinterpret some messages sent to the prophet for a particular situation and try to bring it to modern day understanding. It is not divided into 2 though :)

The Qua'ran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) over a period of 23 years. During this time there were many wars, during which some unbelievers were put to death, there were also others in which they were ransomed if their families had the money to pay, some that were literate were given the chance to teach 10 Muslim children to read instead of paying the money, at the end those whose families could not pay for them were simply let go anyway. Islam has always been a religion of peace and these wars were not started by Muslims, they were started by the Arab unbelievers who did not want a message of only one God preached since they gained a lot of money and prestige from people making pilgrimage to the Ka'ba to visit the idols that were kept there.
But you are correct in your idea that they are only following a part of the Prophets teachings. In fact, what they are trying to do is take the Prophet himself, his example and his teachings out of the religion. Islam says that we are to respect the people of the book, i.e. Jews and Christians. The example of the Prophet and of the 4 Caliphs is being ignored by their intrepretation of Islam. This began after the prophet and the 4 Caliph's (sucessors as leaders of the faith) had died. It is called Wahhabism and was begun in Saudi Arabia by Ibn Abd al-Wahhab. It is not the religion as it was given to the Prophet and it is not the way that most Muslims believe today. Unfortunately, these few extremists have been allowed to hijack Islam for their own political purposes.

First of all muslims believe that Quran was REVEALED and not WRITTEN i.e. similar as INGEEL (BIBLE) as revealed to Prophet Jesus (pbuh). Next, Quran was revealed for a period of about 23 years during the life span of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Sorry, but QURAN no where speaks about killing innocent disbelievers. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) led some part of his life in the city Madinah and Makkah, and his life was little different at these 2 places. Not that he raged wars for sake of killing disbelievers in one part of life and led a peaceful life in the other part.
ISLAM itslelf is a religion of PEACE, and whoever kills a innocent human being (a believer or an unbeliever), he carries the bad deed of killing the whole humanity, this is what the religion says.....
JIHAD: Is not a War against Unbelievers but striving for spiritual good, it is which teaches a Muslim to perform his prayers 5 times a day, refrains him from illegal sex, refrains him from gambling, robbery, adultery.....etc
Before you blame a particular sector, LOOK BOTH SIDES OF AN ISSUE, to understand who is right. Not all Muslims are right and same applies for others.

The two parts are :
1) the Suras whih were inspired in Mecca
2) The Suras Inspired in Medina

it has nothing to do with war and peace, although some Verses were inspired to clearify special events, some including war.

the Qur'an was continuously revealed over 23 years
It has to be taken as a whole book, and not quoted out of context. If the people asked Prophet Muhammad a question, then often verses would be revealed answering this question: eg.

'They ask you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) about the Hour, - when will be its appointed time?
You have no knowledge to say anything about it,
To your Lord belongs (the knowledge of) the term thereof?
You (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) are only a warner for those who fear it,
The Day they see it, (it will be) as if they had not tarried (in this world) except an afternoon or a morning' (Qur'an 79:42-46)

Imagine a whole book being written by Moses such as in the bible.

It calls for the blood of non-believers A LOT.

This is why we should thank God Christians don't revere Moses as the prophet like Islam does Mohammad.
The Jews don't pay attention to Moses as the prophet either.
Thank Goodness for all of this.
This may be Islam's problem today. A bloody religion calling for bloodshed by their prophet.

This raises another question.. If he was waging 26 wars, how did he have time to write all this book in 23 years? Establishing, conquest to be the most convenient way to further the religion.

it was reveled on 23 years , it was not divided into two and if you read the quran you shall realize that
quran is like constitution for our life , it call for self defense, peace, relationship with each others ,talks about how can we treat each other
it is a Constitution for every single daily event
quran and ahadith complete each other and explain to us how to live
some ppl misinterpret verses in quran .specially the verse of jihad .

I am not a Muslim either, but my understanding is that there are reasons for war and reasons for not going to war. It depends on the circumstances and interpretation of any passage.

With any religious book, it's a matter of interpretation and the time and place of the interpretative.
The extremist are following what is important to them.

No...because God send to prophet Mohamed his prophecy & his words to him only not to any another Muslim so he who must receive Gods words so it can't be made by 2 periods and when prophet Mohamed died the Koran was completed no more words were added.
