if you have a good camera for them to use

if he is a professional, it is cheesy. Have you thought about buying a throw away digital camera for each table and allowing all the people setting at that table to take pictures to share with you and your other friends. You coud have the photos of the wedding cermony done professionally and then have the cameras for your friends to take pictures.

Having a Good camera does NOT necessarily mean the images captured will be good(Unless this Friend is a Pro. Photog.?)

Wedding are Special Occasions and will be remembered for the rest of Your Married Lives-Do Not Leave it to Chance(But a Nice Idea anyway to incorporate your Friend!)

Maybe let Your Friends wonder around the wedding taking un-posed,Spontaneous Shots!?

There is nothing wrong with this, but make sure he has someone to work with him. Someone who knows what kind of pictures to take, what pictures YOU want taken, what poses to put you & the bridal party in and also to stay out of the way during the ceremony. You don't want an upset Officiant.
There is no substitute for a GOOD professional, but if this isn't vital to you, then go for it.

Also you may want to supply disposable cameras to the guests, for the reception . You can get some wonderful candid shots.

Not bad, but you might want to ask a few close family/friends for help. Unless they are a professional with the camera, you'll regret not getting professional shots of your wedding.

It really depends on the couple. I didn't want to pay much for pictures and so we paid for a cheaper photographer she hadn't done a lot of weddings but her price was lower. I didn't want to pay a lot. But, now I wish I had because the pictures weren't that great because she didn't know how to pose us and all the pictures look like they are at the same angle. It took her forever to get us our pictures back and she told us she would get them on the web so we could order well it took so long so my mom decided to put them on the web herself because we had CD's by that time so we decided not to order pictures from her becuase she took too long. I was really disappointed she seemed really nice and like she would do a great job but she didn't do a very good job after all.

Pictures ended up being more important then I thought. If your friend can do a good job then save the money but if I could do it over again then I would put more money into it.

Definitely not a bad idea and a money saver too. My cousins asked me to do this for them at their wedding and they continually gush over the photos.

I am not a photographer but I had a nice digital camera and when love is in the air, it is hard NOT to get a great picture!

Good luck!

If they are a friend then they may rather sit and watch the wedding from a normal point of view rather than taking pictures.I know this because my dad is a photographer and he tells me about things like that when the family wants him to take wedding pictures

Its bad if they take shots at you. A wedding should be happy and fun. There should be no guns there.

Actually, we had friends take pictures at my wedding...especially one that likes to take pictures as a hobby. The pictures came out great.

Photographers are TOO expensive. THey also get in the way.

It's not bad, but don't expect great shots or be disappointed if they miss something important like the first kiss or whatever.
Also, it kinda sucks for them because they'll be so anxious to take good pictures that they won't be able to relax and enjoy the occassion with you.

Try asking a friend of a friend instead, someone who won't be upset if they miss out on something. If you insist that they take specific shots or do things a specific way, offer to "hire" them and compensate them with money or a gift.

I would not recommend it. My 'little' brother and his wife had a friend take their wedding video... now it's a big can of worms and they aren't so close anymore (I see both sides and think both played a part in the problem). If the pictures don't turn out, you'll always remember who took the crappy photos - and your friend will feel horrible.
