I have to have a D & C done. My sister had the same thing done and was intubated. I'm scared I'll wake up while the tube is in my throat.

The unfortunate answer is yes, this has happened, although it is rare. And if you do wake up, and were in distress, you would likely be further sedated. Afterwards its very unlikely that you would remember anything.

I wouldn't worry about it, your doctors know what they are doing, and the anesthesiologist has been trained extensively.

Good luck with the D&C

Yes, and this is common. You will have the tube in your throat until you are fully awake and your vitals are normal. When the recovery team feels like you can breathe on your own, they will take it out. I'm speaking from professional and personal experience. If you do wake up with the intubation tube, you won't be able to talk. It doesn't hurt. You can see and hear. Just relax and let it do the work for you. Don't try to take it out or they will strap down your hands. This isn't something to worry about. I've had 16 surgeries and only woke up with the tube one time; and it was a very long surgery. I wouldn't think a D&C would be that drawn out. Godloveya.

Talk to your anesthesiologist.

Depending on your particular physical make-up, your anesthesiologist may want you to be fairly awake before the tube is taken out. If you are difficult to intubate, obese, or at risk for aspiration (inhaling your vomit), then it is in your best interest to be fairly awake when the tube is removed.

Ask your anesthesiologist about using an LMA (laryngeal mask airway) instead of a tube. That is a mask that sits in the back of your throat and doesn't go all the way through the vocal cords. There are times when an LMA is not appropriate, but if it is, you can avoid the tube altogether.

Some anesthesiologists (myself included) still do mask general anesthetics. No tubes at all.

Your other option is a spinal. No tube required.

Good luck with your procedure. I'm sure if you explain your fears to your anesthesiologist, he/she can work something out for you.

Yes, I have. I tried to take a big breath and immediately started coughing and choking. A couple of nurses came running over and I must have passed out, because the next time I woke up the tube was gone.

I've had a D & C and a laperoscopy, and never woke up with a tube in my throat.

If you're concerned, talk to your doctor or anestesiaologist prior to the surgery.

Good luck and I'm sorry you have to deal with all this.

If you"r really freaked about it ask to speak to your doctor when you are admitted and tell him your fears, you will find it most reassuring to be told by the person who is going to be with you that they will look after you with great care. Also for a straight forward D & C your only under for a very short time not very much time for anything to go wrong. RELAX everything WILL be fine. hope that helped.
