There would be NO poverty, discrimination, or hunger...,all races would live together in harmony.., there would be no death or war in Iraq, and everybody would live in a mansion and drive a fast care, live only the veil was BANNED.

OK, no offence, but it would take more than banning a veil to make all that happen. Maybe you should walk out of dreamland and come into the real world.

So you want to tell us that all along the people in the UK were not aware of women wearing this burka, only after Jack Straw's comments has their sight been restored, how absurd!
What has this attire got to do with hindering harmony amongst the British nationals? Ignorance breeds contempt, this is just a typical example of how a misinformed society can react. A teacher loses her job for wearing one in class, but I never heard the views of the pupils she taught, isn't that surprising, in a democratic country? It appears as the media tends to misinform the public knowing fully well that a gullible society awaits whatever they dish out. Such gullibility can be seen no further than from our esteemed friend who assumes the innocent veil is the cause of poverty and discrimination hence it has to be banned. What a shame; I thought interaction of different people could begin through befriending the other, only if your offer of friendship is spurned could you rely on speculation. How many of you out there have tried to befriend someone wearing a burka and then got scorned in return? Few or none at all. It's high time people stopped relying on the grapevine and begin making inroads in embracing the minority communities so as to enjoy the much wanted harmony amongst the races.

Sounds great but don't get me wrong....just removing a burka will not change everything...these people whoever they are are trying to ban religion altogether, one minute its a burka, then a cross, next it will be something else and once they get through trying to do all that they will pick something else to ban.

I have been brought up to treat everyone as an equal, regardless to colour, religion etc....why can't everyone just live their lives respecting each other...is that too much to ask?. If you don't like something thats fine, thats your opinion, you are allowed to express that but religion and colour have been around for 1000's of years so why can't some people just accept that and let everyone get on with their lives?

hello
let me tell you something
i am a muslim and i completly agree with you a million percent.except for the harmony of everything, the burka isnt the numba 1 problem u know!!!!! (its blair he he lol)
i wouldnt want to be talking to some one who covers their face i mean COME ON!!!! i think covering your hair and keeping your whole face out is good because it is still noticable and not alienating eg: like turbans.
but what i dont understand is that if you cover your hair and body and what not you are SHOWINg that you are a good muslim whereas the inside may not be a good muslim.
i dont cover my hair but still have time to practice my religion and be good. no offence to all burka wearers but you have to understand where i'm comin from. keep it up but covering every thing is tooooooo extreme and can confuse people.

The answer is for everyone to wear the veil. It would certainly help with me and Jack Straw. There could be a problem with page 3 girls. (Phwar - look at the eyes on that)

ban the veil ,or let them wear it at home ,what makes these people think there so beautiful that western men want to look at them anyway.i don't mean to cause offence but the women who i have seen wearing the said garment have been very overweight.there looks i can not comment on.for obvious reasons.but if your in to large ladies then go for it.and yes i know guardian readers not all who wear that mask are overweight.[can only speak of what i see] in my town.on top of that it is separatist,as so many have stated b4 facial expression is a very important part of communication.how the hell are you supposed to communicate with someone properly you cant see.

Well done "jack" Finally some one in office that isn't affraid to speak out for "his Brittish" people. Wonder what Islam would say if we planted a Church of England church in the middle of his country and walked around his country wear "brittish" clothes.

We respect other countries traditions its time they returned the favour and live the way we do, if they don't like it go back to where you come from, sorry to offend any one but its true!

Daft question, but yes, the burka and veil should be illegal. We don't like hoodies in this country.

The only reason for wearing a mask is because you don't want to be identified while commiting a crime.

Mind you, maybe it's really Ripley's alien queens under those hoods. Part of their takeover.

Jack Staw has guts and he was right. Good for him. When I speak with another person, I want to see their face. (1) Facial expression is a large part of communication. (2) If Muslim women wish to enforce the tenets of their religion so much, they are free to leave England and live in an Islamic country. (3) You may be entitled to practice parts of your religion, but *I* am not REQUIRED to honor it.

England is secular. It would be proper if Muslims would acknowledge and respect her laws and history.

I like you. I like the way you think. I have faith that if we follow your plans, everyone in the future will get to be a shallow, rich person, who never wears the same suit twice. I know that's my goal.

Usually I would be against this idea, but since it's coming from you, it must be great.
