I think some religions use brainwashing, but certainly there are some good and "true" religions out there. I think if the parents are religious then they can raise their children in that religion, provided there is nothing harmful about the religion. When the children get older I think they should be able to decide what religion or lack thereof is right for them. I think the parents/family should be respectful of whatever decision the child makes about religion?

I believe in letting your children choose. I was raised in a Christian Church yet I am now Wiccan. I choose my own path when the beliefs I was being taught didn't feel right to me.
I will be letting my children choose their own paths in life by educating them in the different religions that are out there. Obviously I would be pleased for the them to choose my beliefs but it is a personal preference. As for is it brainwashing.
Yes some types of religion is, all you have to do is turn on the TV or read where one cult or the other is doing this or that. Forcing someone to believe what you believe is brainwashing.

Of course it is, when people give their power away they become vary vulnerable, I believe if you belong to any religion you would be wise to use some common sense toward their teachings. I believe this is why we have so many religious wing nuts today, parents raising their children in all kinds of different religions, that they them selves are caught up in. Most children today are brought up with out the opportunity to make their own choices, because parents are making those choices for them good or bad.

Of course it's brainwashing. Why do you think people go to church? You pay some guy to tell you what you want to hear.Supposedly, they're getting it from the bible, but they only tell you what you want to believe the bible says.If you actually read it,you can figure out it was written by men.It IS NOT any so-called gods word. Then you pay him for it.Then you teach your children that this is right.
I have no problem with what other people believe.I was brought up to believe in a god.Fortunately,I was born with a brain and the ability to think. Now I'm agnostic because I need more than a poorly written novel to base my life on.

Religion CAN be brainwashing, but it doesn't have to be. And as for raising kids to believe something, that is a touchy field. A lot of parents have strong beliefs that they believe are infallible, and they really want their children to share them. But, I do think it is good to encourage kids to think critically about what they are being taught. I wish I had been encouraged to do that more. As a kid and teenager, I was indoctrinated by the church I went to. I would resent them for it, but on the same token, I allowed it to happen.

I don't believe that children should be "raised" in any religion: I think that they should study and analyze, and not make any decisions about their beliefs of life and the Universe until they are at least old enough to drink...
For what people seem to believe is the most important decision they could ever make, it is amazing how few people really research the subject...

I think children should have the choice when they are older to decide what religion they want to become and as for brainwashing it only is when a person refuses to think for themselves or believe something to be completely true because they fear not too.

Yes it is. Organized religion was developed as a way of taking control over the masses. The original Catholic church began this control by removing a person's right to direct contact with their inner god and by preventing a person's ability to think for themselves.

Religion is not brain washing. Because we all have the free will to believe in what ever we want to believe in. Just because someone teaches their kids their religion, it doesnt mean they will believe it.

This is exactly how I am raising my daughter. She does not attended church as my husbands religion dictates (though neither does he) and we do not give "bible lessons" on either of our religions. (Mine doesn't use the bible) She was not baptized; though my mother in law would like to protest. And when she is old enough to understand what a religion is; what it entails; and which one speaks to her; then she will be allowed to follow her own path. I think this should be the open minded approach most should adapt, even if they are just converting out of the church you have raised them in.
