Front to back, back to front, side to side, in and out-- dry or damp, whatever gets the area clean is fine in my opinion.

When you clean him, I would recommend whatever is most convenient for you. No matter what you do, it won't make much difference. When he's ready to take charge, he'll just naturally go for what feels right for him (no matter what you did).

I think what's most important is not to stress him out over any of this. Sometimes the wetness you see in his underwear might not be what you think it is. In other words, you may think he went a little bit before telling you he needed to go, when in fact the wetness might be the result of a little leaking from the previous time he went to the potty. When a boy goes #1, his bladder might have emptied completely, but some of the urine might still be in the shaft of his penis. When he stands up to pull his underwear up, the remaining urine in the shaft may drip into his underwear and remain there until next time. I wouldn't worry about the little bit of wetness. He'll get a handle on all of that in good time (as he learns more about his body).

I think the most important thing is to always be positive and sweet sounding when you are involved in the potty thing. When he reaches the point where he wants to wipe his own butt, and you want to see how well he did, I think it's important to say let mommy check to see how well you did. And after the check, no matter how poorly he may have done, it's always you're doing pretty good, but you're not as good as mommy yet, so let me do a little touching up. Later, it's you're doing so much better! I only have to do a little bit of touching up. And finally, it's you're doing so good, you're really grown up, and I'm so proud of you, etc. etc.

I'm glad you're a mother who's interested in her son and wants to learn all she can to make his childhood a pleasant experience for him. Your son in fortunate to have you.

Everyone is supposed to wipe from front to back. Its healthier, theres more bacteria that exists via the anus than any other place on the body. But trust me, at this stage, if you can get him to wipe (especially boys) at ALL you're doing a great job.

He needs to know that he can tell when he has to potty, and start the process on the toilet. Get a good schedule going so you know about when he's going to pee, and start asking him all the time if he has to go potty. Start sticking him in the bathroom and asking him to go potty real quick so it can be over.

ALso, kids learn by watching. When you have to go, say "i have to go pee" and then go to the potty and leave the door open so he can follow if he wants. If he can see the whole senerio he can see how to apply it for himself.

A survey administered to a sample population of 106 people by a Steve Silverman, a science teacher in Albany, shows the following wiping statistics:

44% wipe from front to back from behind their backs.
60% look at the paper after they wipe.
50% say that they have wiped with leaves.
8% have wiped with their hands.
2% have wiped with money.

Silverman's survey shows that 44% of people asked wipe from front to back. A registered nurse and acquaintance claims that wiping from the back to front is actually more sanitary. The geometry of the region creates a natural collection area when wiping to the front. This direction is better suited for cleaning.

The following are some interesting percentages on toilet paper use taken from a Kimberly Clark survey in July 5th, 2000. It shows that more men "fold" and more women "wad".

40% fold or stack, 40% wad or crumple, 20% wrap it around their hand.
52% (Men) & 38% (Women) are "folders"
38% (Men) & 52% (Women) are "wadders"
6% (Men) & 6% (Women) have no preference
4% (Men) & 3% (Women) don't know

they wipe from front to back. Have your spouse take him a few times and show him. You can also try putting a cheerio in the potty and have him try to sink it. This might get him to go when he needs to

I t does not matter what direction men wipe. women do it front to back so that they do not introduce fecal matter into the urethra because of infection.

Always, always.. from front to back... if you go from back to front you're still transferring bacteria from "poop"

You are going to have that mostly until he recognizes the urge... most kids wait until they have to really go, befor they go anyhow...jsut give him a little time... he'll pick it up...
