Hell, even quint in the movie JAWS could barely get a scream out. this is what was said, inside the fish mind you:

Jonah's Prayer
1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. 2 He said:
"In my distress I called to the LORD,
and he answered me.
From the depths of the grave [a] I called for help,
and you listened to my cry.
3 You hurled me into the deep,
into the very heart of the seas,
and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves and breakers
swept over me.

4 I said, 'I have been banished
from your sight;
yet I will look again
toward your holy temple.'

5 The engulfing waters threatened me, [b]
the deep surrounded me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head.

6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you brought my life up from the pit,
O LORD my God.

7 "When my life was ebbing away,
I remembered you, LORD,
and my prayer rose to you,
to your holy temple.

8 "Those who cling to worthless idols
forfeit the grace that could be theirs.

9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving,
will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
Salvation comes from the LORD."

10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land

As you rightfully said, Jonah was swallowed by the fish and then vomited onto dry land. This shows that not only was Jonah alive and conscious but he also feared God and prayed.

There's only two possibilities:

1) Jonah died and his soul prayed this, in eternity, prior to his resurrection, 3 days hence.

2) Jonah didn't die, but was miraculously preserved, in which case he had 3 days to compose and say this prayer.

My money is on number 1.

You know? If someone put a gun to my head and tried to force me to tell them how God did certain things - either in the Bible or even in my own personal life - I'd have to tell them they're going to have to pull the trigger because I really don't know how He did what He did, therefore, I couldn't even begin to tell them.

I don't know all the intricate workings of a lightbulb, but do I have to know all that to benefit from the way a light bulb works?

That said, I don't know how God's Word came forth from the prophet Jonah inside the belly of the fish. But I realize I don't have to know how it came forth in order to benefit from it.

If you read it carefully, all Jonah actually said was "God - help! If you'll just get me out of this..." All the rest was what he remembered later.

He couldn't, which is why they call such tales "big fish stories." But that it couldn't literally have happened doesn't entirely cancel out the message of the story.

by fish, they meant whale. the mouth of a whale is HUGE compared to the mouth of a shark (like in 'jaws'). so he was just sitting on the whale's tongue, chillin' and talking to god.
