This is one of the dumbest things in the bible. Why would God do this? Gen 11:5

But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. 6 The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other

So that people don't begin to think too highly of themselves. The Tower of Babel was symbolic of a paradigm shift where people stopped relying on God and started to rely more on themselves.

even today we feel the effects of this - we can't communicate with everyone because of our different cultures and languages. Of course, as we overcome these boundaries with increased education and technology, we see our reliance on God slipping more and more.

Turns out that God kind of knows what He is doing.

Genesis was merely trying to explain how God was thought to have created the world and all the various cultures of humanity. It was version 2.01 in our attempts to understand our history. Today we are reading version 5,203 or something.

To answer your question, it was thought and often expressed through scripture that somehow the world as we knew it was like a doll house inside the House of God. So, the legitimate fear of Hebrews was, what if someone were actually able to build a tower high enough to be able to step outside of the doll house and into the very presence of God. Of course, God wouldn't want that, would he? So, seeing these fools trying to do so, He confused them enough to keep them from being able to complete the task.

Of course, we know today that it would be impossible for anyone to build a building that could physically put us into the presence of God. Furthermore, most people in the world communicate rather effectively today through use of computer and learning English or Spanish. Furthermore, we are sending rockets to comets and haven't found God yet.

So, we can safely assume that God didn't do what Genesis said they did, He would have had no reason to. He could have merely let them keep building until they gave up or until the building merely collapsed on top of them, which of course they would have deserved for the evil they planned in their hearts.

But, perhaps the only real argument anyone can have for getting them to stop communicating on this topic was to protect them from their own foolishness because the building would have indeed collapsed on top of them and they would have perished. So that's the best answer I have for you. He loved them enough to save them from themselves.

Because we thought back then, the same way we (as a race) do now...If we can come together and do things our own way, and believe what we want to believe, we can make since of things better and we will find out who God is and if heaven exists on our own. We don't need God.

If you think that is dumb, you should see what the European Union just built for their southern parliament building in Strasbourg, France ... a modernized version of the Tower of Babel ... no kidding!

God knew that man could do things collectively faster than he could do them individually. And, in the case you are referring to, it had to do with idolatry.
