No, you do not need to attend medical school to become a podiatrist. Podiatrists have their own podiatry schools which you can attend to become a podiatrist. Currently there are 8 schools that can train you to become a podiatrist. Go to this link to find out what are those 8 schools: http://www.aacpm.org/html/collegelinks/cl_schools.asp

Of course, you can also go to medical school and earn your MD and become specialize in foot, but those people will not be called podiatrist, they will be called orthopedic surgeon.

You might ask what's the difference between a orthopedic surgeon and a podiatrist, and the answer to that is the treatment methods. Even though those 2 professions are both specialize in foot, the theories of how to treat foot diseases are somewhat different.

From my own opinion and experience, I would recommend you to try to apply for medical school or DO school first.
