My brother is headed to Camp Buka (I think that is right) next month, any advice on what to take or what the conditions are like?
God Bless our troop over there and the people they are trying to help.

my husband just left for iraq. there are many different camps but the weather is very warm. ave 105 during the day and 80 at night. however his unit has good air conditioning.

as for what to take, he should have a packing list that will give him everything he needs. make sure to get him international phone cards. even though the lines are super long to use the phone, this will save a great deal on collect charges. (keep in mind that a connection charge from over there takes about 40 minutes off the card!) other than that send cigarettes if he smokes--i was told a carton of smokes goes for about $115. you can send stamps and such, but i spoke to a friend who had just gotton back and had a huge stack of mail waitng for him--it was letters he had written while overseas. the poor guy had over 50 letters he had written to his mom, and they never got sent to her! so he dropped them in the mail after he got back.

also i have a list of some places who will send care packages to soliders overseas. if you are interested you, or anyone else who wants this information can email me at: kimmie@post.com
please put "solider care packages" in the subject so i remember not to report you as spam!!

good luck and god bless

I was stationed in Camp Bucca for a couple months near the end of my tour. It's not bad as far as FOB's (forward operating bases) go, mostly because it's an Air Force Base. There's a huge chow hall- tell him to beware of "Lobster night". There are several "Haji Marts" where he can buy anything from cellphones to movies. The MRW (morale, recreation and welfare) is pretty nice; lots of exercise equipment, and books. They have football and baseball teams on base- Mostly because if you're stuck there you're hardly ever going to leave the wire. There's a Subway, an alterations place, a barbershop and I believe they were putting in another restaurant when I left...BugerKing maybe? Again; this is an Air Force base, and they get all the good ****. They have shower and bathroom trailers, sothere's actual running water and flushable toilets-that's awesome!
What else...Oh! Chances are he's going to be living in a tent for a while. They were bringing in more housing units when I left, but I don't know if he'll be able to move straight in to a connex. Eventually however he'll be moved into a two man housing unit with a wall locker and a bed...They're actually pretty comfortable. Now as far as his mission...It depends. He could be put on Force Protection, which means that he guards the perimiter of the camp. Or he could be inside the TIF guarding the prisoners...It's all up to what branch he's in and what his units mission is. Anymore questions let me know! :)

Buuca named for Ronald Bucca the Army Reserve SGT and NYC Fire Fighter killed at the WTC. Bucca is about 30 mins from the Kuwati border it is very built up. It has all the aminities you expect on a big military base so he wont need to take much. The Camp has everything he'll need and people seend care packages all the time. Tell him to take just a few comfort items to get him by in case he gets stuck at Ali A Saleem air base in transit.

His superiors will advise him of what to take and what to leave here. The military is very good in that regards.
