I have a very hyper child. He is NOT adhd. I have cut sugar. Doesn't help. I heard about another mother who changed her child's diet and it completely calmed her child. She cut sugars and a perservative out. Does anyone know what perservative to cut?
He is not hyper from lack of activities, etc. I do not need advice about what activities to have him in etc.
NO STUPID ANSWERS please!! I need some real answers. Thanks!!

Hello!!! I asked for no schedule changes, etc!! And no stupid answers!!
I keep him really busy with activities, indoor and outdoor. He watches hardly any t.v and plays hardly any game system games. I have cut sugar out of his diet already. I have tried Sleepy Time tea...which seems to work as long as I can get him to lay down right after he drinks it.
Thanks for the red dye tip. I will try that.
I know there is a preservative though. I have tried to do web searches but have come up empty-handed. They only bring up ADHD stuff. He does not have ADD, he is very smart. He is just too hyper. I have been dealing with this since he learned to crawl...he will be 4yrs this month. I need to change something before he goes to pre-school so that he isn't labeled a problem child.

All preservatives can be a problem, but simple carbohydrates are the usual culprits. Avoid them (white flour, sugar--which you've done, all processed foods, white rice). Focus on whole grains (i.e. not the same thing as whole wheat--if you buy a loaf of whole wheat bread, chances are that it is a processed simple carb--instead focus on whole grain. Whole grain pasta, brown rice (or Uncle Ben's--the nutritious part of the rice, the "germ" is pushed into the grain, not taken out) and whole grain cereal; lots of green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes instead of regular ones, no sodas or juice "drinks"--pure juice, please--apples, bananas, raisins and blueberries are one of the most wholesome foods available. You can usually find frozen, organic ones. My grandson, age 4, is on this diet and he is as calm as a cucumber. He never even went through a "no" stage when he was 2. Hope this helps!

They say to cut out anything with red dye! Cut sugar, caffine. I'm not sure about other preservatives, but I heard from many people about the red dye, and I have seen the difference in their kids. Weird, but give it a try won't hurt anything. Good Luck
You say in your details that he does not have ADD or ADHD...he is very smart, having either of these does not mean they're stupid! ADD is attention deficate disorder, just means they have a hard time stay focused. And ADHD is the same only hyper active. Although many do have trouble learning simply because they cannot stay focused not because they're stupid. There are many BRILLIANT people out there who have this problem! Has he been checked for ADD or ADHD, or is this your assumption??? I am not trying to be rude towards you, but the way you said he doesn't have ADD or ADHD because he's smart may be taken offensivly by some people. And if you haven't had him checked maybe you should.

For any youngster an excessively healthy diet, with greens, fruit, complete grains, lean meats, and so on..is what they want. Limit any needless sugars like in fruit juice, koolaid, cereals. Go with one hundred% fruit juice, ones that don't upload further sugar. Fresh, frozen culmination have usual sugars in them so that's a well deal with for them once they wish anything candy.

Organic foods is always the best way to go. Not only will it promote optimum health but the hyper activity will simply disappear!
Cut out anything processed. No white bread, rice, or milk even. Switch to soy milk if he can get used to it. They have different flavors.

Try cutting wheat, then cow's milk products from his diet as well. It isn't simply sugar, but refined carbohydrates: you want to give him whole grains, but not wheat - try each for a week before you delete another, to see how he responds. you may find that one of those dietary influences contributes to the hyperactivity -- also, sprouted grain products can be very beneficial - Essence bread, for example. it's pretty yummy, makes good pb+j sandwiches.

I read an article about this a while back. The teacher had the hyper children do yoga everyday and they became calmer. The children also learned how to do the yoga themselves and did this at home also.

No wheat, no sugar, no TV, no video games. Lots of running and jumping during the day. Early to bed, early to rise. Stabilize his schedule. Change yourself first.

One prescribed by his PEDIATRICIAN, not suggestions made up by posters on a message board. Input from other parents in your position is fine but pleeeeese, are you seriously asking here for a diet that you are going to feed your child at a time in his life when every part of him is developing and depends upon the nutritional content of his meals in order to thrive?
Get a perspective. Make an appointment with a nutritionist who specializes in this field, this isn't something you get to do half way.
PS ALL CHILDREN ARE HYPER.

Try feeding him fruits and vedgies, and not too many grains. Though some people say that stuff like bread, flour based meals make them drowsy but then there's overweight...
