My dog is walking with his head tilted to the left and his ear is draining but I don't know what happened to him. What can I do to treat it or find out what happened? He is a basset hound.

I don't have enough money to take him to the vet. We are very poor right now. Is there anything I can do at home for him?

Well to anyone else who says that im not poor because I have internet service, we just found out my dad has diabetes, so we had to get medicine for him and pay the bills for the doctor, and my mom has bronchitis so we also have to pay the medical bills for her so we are short on money. I am not abusing my dog i love him more than anything, we are just short on money and we need to find a cheap remedy so we can pay the bills and still live in a house.

poor pup sounds like something is bothering him, maybe an infection or mites - you say you don't have the $$ to take him to the vet, maybe try putting drops of rubbing alcohol in his ears - this will help dry up any drainage, and it should kill the mites. My vet put me on to this trick years ago, if you look at the ingredients in one of those expensive bottles of ear drops that the vet prescribes, it's mainly alcohol anyway. I do this regularly now for my dog, she's a shi tzu with floopy ears so she's prone to infections too. Good luck!

If it is an ear infection - and it sounds like a bad one, maybe an abcess, you CAN"T treat it without the proper medications.

Dogs, particularly the breeds with the long flap ears (Bassetts, Goldens etc) , get ear infections because of the way the ear lays prevents drainage.

It could abcess from an infection, or he could have been scratching his ear and caused a tiny abrasion and the bacteria entered and it abcessed

YOU CAN NOT TREAT IT YOU NEED ANTIBIOTICS AND/OR ANTI-FUNGALS

BOTH FUNGUS AND BACTERIA CAUSE INFECTIONS - BUT NEED DIFFERENT DRUGS

IT IS NOT EAR MITES - NOT WITH THE DRAINAGE!!!!!!

Now pick up the phone and call the vet.

" don't have enough money to take him to the vet. We are very poor right now. Is there anything I can do at home for him?"

What part of YOU CAN NOT TREAT IT WITHOUT PRSCRIPTION DRUGS AND A DIAGNOSIS OF THE TYPE OF INFECTION DON'T YOU GET???

Now failure to provide medical care for an illness or injury is a CRIME in most states and is called animal abuse.

You have these choices:

(1) borrow $10 here, $25 there from anyone you know

(2) find a pawnshop and sell or pawn whatever you have to

(3) take a loan on your credit card

(4) find a payday loan advance place and take out a loan (no credit checks needed). You will pay a whopping interest and may have to roll the loan over and pay it off gradually but you will have the money. An ear infection shouldn't be more than $75-150.

YOU AREN'T THAT POOR - YOU HAVE INTERNET SERVICE.

Either way on dialup you are paying over $50 a month for phone and IPS or broadband in which case it is well over $55 a month

Cancel your internet , don't rent movies, give up McDonalds and save the money for emergencies like this.

Other option is to contact Basset Rescue and have them take him and place him in a home where he will receive care.

It sounds like your dog has an ear infection and he needs antibiotics to get rid of it. Most reputable vets out there will take into consideration financial problems - they may be able to set up a monthly system to pay back the money, all the while decreasing their service fee and charging you the minimal amount for medicine, etc. If you're up front with your vet and let them know how long it would be to pay them back, etc. he/she might be able to help you out. Most vets go into this type of business because they love animals and want to help them out - they do come across a lot of hardship cases, but most have some sort of plan in place for these cases. If your usual vet doesn't, call around. Good luck!

He needs to go to the vet whether you can afford it or not-- it is an abcess or infection and it can get worse with time and cause permanent damage. I hate to be the mean one here, but if you cant afford vet costs you shouldn't have a pet-- they come with the territory and are a fact of ownership. A pet does not deserve to lay there in pain because you got 'excited' about having a pet and weren't prepared.

Get him fixed up and consider finding a home that can better care for him. Or work out a payment plan with the vet and see if you cant save a cushion for this next time-- if you truly want to keep him you'll make it a priority.

Your dog might have an ear infection, or a brain tumor. If you can't afford taking your dog to the vet I would suggest finding him a new home where he can get his ear looked after right away.
I am sorry about how you don't have the money for your dog. But he needs a vet. Find some way to do it please.
Like I said, maybe you need to find him a new home where he can get the medical attention he needs.

Hope you can get back on your feet and maybe afford your dogs vet bills.
Sorry to hear about your Dad's health :*(

Your dog MUST go to the vet. But, if you cannot pay the bill, I would suggest calling vets until you find one that is sympathetic enough to let you "work off" the bill instead of asking for money. I was able to get my cat's surgury, which was $1600, for free - but I had to do some filing and landscaping to "pay" him back.

Maybe he/she needs garbage removed from the parking lot, or windows washed, or kennels cleaned. Perhaps if you hold a collection drive in the community for towels and blankets (ALWAYS needed) they'd be willing to consider it an even trade.

This concept works in all aspects of life - sometimes people don't need money - they need work done. Society didn't always have money - they bartered for goods and services. Keep this in mind.

Good luck with your doggie and I hope you get help for him soon.

I'm afraid it sounds like an ear infection and home remedies won't be of much use for that. He'll need antibiotic ear drops for it.

I know you have a tight financial situation, but maybe you could discuss that with your vet and see if he will allow you to postpone payment for a couple of weeks with a small down payment. If you've been with the same vet for a while, they sometimes will work with "regular" patients for things like this.

Otherwise, you might try contacting your local shelter, explain your situation to them as well. If they are unable to help you, they might at least be able to refer to a vet that will.

I'm sorry there isn't an easier way to do this, but your dog will need to see a vet to properly clear this up most likely.

If it an ear infection, he probably needs a shot. It could be a tick in his ear. If so, I used to treat my dogs by warming some Watkins salve in a pan (just warm to your touch when you put you finger in it and to be liquid). Tilt the dog's head over and expose his ear canal. Carefully pour the salve into the ear canal, and hold for about a minute. Allow the dog to clear his ear (you want to be outside when you do this). Repeat this about three times a day until the dog gets better. If nothing else, it will make the ear feel better. The salve will help soothe and eventually heal the problem.

Take him to the vet. It's probably either an ear infection (common in bassets) or a head injury.

Sounds like he may have an ear infection.
Bassetts becasue of the length of the ear flaps are prone to infections.
If they get water into the ear cannal it can be tought to get it to dry out with all that flap over the ear.
Take the dog to the vet and get it treated and after that you may need to apply and ear drop to dry out the ear or wipe them out once a day with a soft cloth to keep them drier.
