Darling we don't even have the same books!!

People are human. They have to debate EVERYTHING!

Catholic bibles have more books that Protestant ones.

There were already two significantly different versions of the Hebrew scriptures (Tanak) at the time of Jesus himself. There was the traditional Hebrew version and there was the Greek version, known as the Septiguagint.

The difference being the Palestinian version did not contain: Tobit (where we get the Golden Rule from), Judith, 1 & 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch - as well as editing parts of Daniel and Esther.

Jesus never said one was better than the other. So... The original apostles probably would have read the Hebrew version. But then Jesus appeared to Paul and said bring in the Gentiles. So they would have switched to the Greek version.

You see, several centuries before Jesus - Alexander the Great took over most of Europe. Including the Jews. Being Greek, he decided he'd create one HUGE Greek nation. So everyone learned Greek. It was a common language. Jesus himself would have spoken Aramaic, Hebrew AND Greek. Probably Latin too.

So the Greek version would have been the way to bring in many many disciples. We can confirm in our own minds that this was Jesus's doing because prior to his conversion by Jesus Paul was quoted as saying he'd rather kill his own children than have them learn Greek. He was a very serious Jew.

Fast forward 1500 years. Martin Luther decides he's got some issues with his church. Martin Luther COULD have been a revolutionary. But he got very self-righteous rather than righteous. He started out well. But in my opinion when he began his campaign of slaughter and book burning he went too far.

Back to the subject at hand...

Luther decided to pull out the bible books that contained Catholic dogma. So he went back to the Palestinian version of Hebrew Scripture.

This idea really doesn't work because if you're going to reject the Greek version, then you have to reject the whole New Testament as well. Luther in fact did want to seriously edit the New Testament too. But his cohorts drew the line at him wanting to remove James, Acts and Revelation.

So there you have it. 72 books in the Catholic Bible. 66 in the Protestant.

Friend Colorado up there has part of the idea, but he's missing the big picture. The two versions of the Tanak were established about 150 years before Jesus came along.

While the books in the Old Testament(as called by Christians) and the Tanakh(as it is called by Jews) are the same, they are in different order for several reasons:

(1) The canon wasn't entirely finalised until after Jesus' death. Even though all the OT books were very old by then, there was dispute in his time about what books belonged and which ones didn't. Obviously, the Torah(the five books of Moses) were included, Psalms, Isaiah, and many others were as well. Some others such as Esther, Song of Solomon weren't officially included until around 100 AD.

(2) Early Christianity was a lot closer to Judaism than it was to being a separate religion.By the time this canon was finalized, they were further apart, so it's not like they could sit down and decide as a group.

(3) For Jews and Christians, the purpose of the Jewish Bible are different. The "OT" for Christians is seen as almost a prequel to the real gospel, so the thinking was to keep it more or less, chronological. For Jews, it is the entirety of their holy writings as well as THEIR history as a people, and as such, they divide it more by function- of where it belongs in terms of meaning. While both Christians and Jews see from Genesis to Malachi as being God's word, their perspective is different on its meaning and that is reflected int he order, as well.

If the Jewish people had understood the prophecies of Isaiah, they could have understood that Messiah got here first a million) to pay the cost for guy's sins (by way of dying on the flow, that's the curse of putting on a tree), this had to be accomplished by way of a guy, and by way of a spotless guy, typified interior the Levitical sacrifices by way of the spotless lamb. THEN 2) Messiah could rule and reign with appropriate righteousness. considering Israel rejected Christ via fact the Messiah, the Gentile era is now in result. whilst Jesus Christ returns the 2nd time, all those prophecies will actually be fulfilled. you may learn the previous few chapters of the e book of Revelation with the prophecies of Ezekiel, Zechariah, and Isaiah.

Because Jesus' followers are Christian. The manuscripts were written around the time of his life and death. The books Genesis-malachi are inconsequential in that what really matters is Jesus died for us to save us from all the stuff that happened to sinners in the Old testament. It also shows that are sacraments have changed. It also shows the predestination of Jesus. Focus on Jesus. He's the way to God.

If I remember right, the Jewish order is of importance or something like that. Except for Job, Esther and Ruth, the Christian order is more chronological.

no one really gave you the right answer. It is very simpe, the Christians wanted books in the bible that contain references to the coming of a messiah to appear closer to the end so it looks like they predic the coming of Jesus. Even though there are many prophesies in the bible, the refer to the messiah, nothing in the old testament refers to Jesus, nothing.

What does that have to do with anything? So what if they are in different orders. Focusing on minutia only causes division.
