It might help to join a group at first. Find a good teacher. There are many different kinds of meditation. Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, etc... Stick to the one that is your faith or closest to it.

Some styles work on "emptying the self." Focusing on nothing. Simply stop the chatter in your head.

Some styles focus on an event, say in Christian history. Meditating on the mysteries of the gospel.

Both Buddhists and Christians often chant to shut down the background noise in their heads. Indian Buddhists will use the oh so famous "om" chant. Eastern Rite Catholics use the "Jesus Prayer" - Lord Jesus, have mercy on me. Or just Lord Jesus over and over again. Western Rite Catholics will use "Sacred Heart of Jesus I place all my trust in you."

Posture is utterly unimportant. Just be comfortable. Wear loose clothing.

One thing I learned from my Wiccan friends was to start out doing something physical, such as cross your fingers. This way you "train" yourself to reach a meditative state faster.

Neurotheology tells us that meditation is not just something you do. It is an actual state of the brain that can be recreated in the lab by use of magnets.

So you teach yourself a "signal" as it were. Then when you find yourself in a stressful situation, you can give yourself this signal and immediate calm comes over you. Takes time to get to that point.

Sit cross legged. Focus on breathing in through the nose and out of the mouth. Empty your mind of all material thoughts and desires and get in touch with your inner being. Some people use a mantra. I read a teaching of the Buddha and then focus solely on that while I meditate.

When I massage someone. It truly takes on a form itself that can be so humbelilng and magnificent at the same time. My chakras are open, and I let the energy flow so that I can heal others, and rejuvinate their bodies with a loving touch. I go into the void, and all of the earthly voices quiet themselves, while I am helping others. It is so wonderful to have that connection with someone, and yet feel at peace with yourself.
I wish you well

There's lots of different ways to do this, but it all comes down to calming the mind and body.

I usually get in a comfortable position, close my eyes, do some counting, then think of a "happy place" for a minute or two, and then just focus on breathing deeply.

It's great, I use it a lot to calm down enough to feel answers to my prayers, and I use it to ease chronic pain, and sometimes just to help me sleep.
