You want to deal ONLY with reputable reliable breeders who have been working with the breed for a long time and are not doing a one-off, gee-wouldn't-it-be-fun litter in their backyard.
First, for breeds generally, use the AKC website.
http://www.akc.org/breeds/index.cfm?nav_area=breeds
http://www.akc.org/breeds/whippet/index.cfm
On the AKC'S page for each breed there will be a link in the left hand column labelled "Breed Club". Follow it. It takes you to the AKC affiliated national club for that breed.
Here is the club for Whippets:
http://www.americanwhippetclub.net/
All the clubs maintain a breeders'list or referral. The breedersall abide by a Code of Ethics, do written contracts, do all the health checks on their dogs for hereditary problems, do health guarantees, typically require if you at any time during its life you can't keep the dog, it goes back to them and are always willing to help with advice and assistance.

This page ahs the contact for referrals to a breeder.
Now every National Breed CLub also has a rescue for dogs of their breed.
PLEASE PLEASE CONSIDER ADOPTING.
The dogs have lost their homes for many reasons - owners moved, illness in the family, death....
Breed rescue takes great trouble to get to know the dog, its personality, termperment and level of training. They take great pains to match the dog to the right home.

Expect that a responsible breeder and a breed rescue will interview you. Neither will place a dog with someone just because they want one and can pay for it.

Still no Whippet Natalieee?
Did you join the join the yahoo group Whippetsanity? If you want to forward me your contact info I can post it and help you find a puppy. Have you contacted any breeders?
snoogans - There are NOT 1,000s in rescue! At the time I think there are 3-4. Of course the dog tracks don't want them, they are not raced commercially. Don't answer if you don't know anything about the topic.
There are NOT 266 Whippet or Whippet Xs on Petfinder. I thought maybe I was unaware of some huge Whippet rescue problem so I went through the first 100 Whippet ads. I saw 3 Whippets, 2 of which were ads for WRAP. There was one I am sure was either a Whippet X or else just a very large Whippet. The rest? Not likely! Shelters and all-breed rescues tend to call ANY dog with a tuck-up a Whippet X. They don't even look remotely like Whippet Xs. I get very tired of this, Whippet breeders are generally very consciencious and a REAL Whippet X is rare. You'd think, from all the supposed Whippet Xs out there, we were a very irresponsible bunch. Stupid rescues are mostly totally clueless when it comes to breed identification.

There at currently 266 whippets or whippet mixes listed on Petfinder.com (shelter and rescue dogs). Naturally not all of those would be appropriate for you and many may be out of your area, but there are definitely whippets available for rescue if you are interested.
