Reification.

Religion yes. Except for arcane laws that are not enforced, how does gov't regulate sexual practices in your own home?

Religion may not have a 'right' to do so, but it does have a responsibility to inform its practioners of what its god thinks about different things.

After all, if the religion's god CREATED sex for some purpose, then it would be wrong of us to corrupt that gift and it would certainly be nice to know how the god wishes the gift used.

Government probably should not worry about it a lot, but the phrase 'informed consenting adults' is a little slippery. How do you define an adult? How do you ensure consent? Who does the informing and when- and about what? Where does the idea of public safety or protecting one from oneself come into effect?

A lot of the laws are designed to enact morality- and many of these probably should be phased out. Some were the result of an emotional event and shold be rethought. (Most laws and acts done in the grip of high emotions are bad!)

Should the governemnt get out of the bedroom? The easy answer is 'yes', but...

What about the battered wife who won't press charges? How about the person with limited cognitive abilities 'talked into' something? People using various forms of pressure to coerce someone into 'choosing' to do stuff they do not want to do? Sexual practices that endanger one of the people's life or health (not only because of STDs, but also things like partial strangulation or bloodletting)?

I think there needs to be a balance. Sex is not really something most of us are calm and rational about, so it is something that can easily cause us to make poor and potentially dangerous choices. We need something to help us keep at least a little more responsible.

Why do people announce that they are gay? I dont walk around saying I have sex with men (technically one man). I dont walk around saying I am straight. I am straight. Who cares who you sleep with, geesh. If gay people realized that there are ways to have their significant other's have the same rights as married people without being married, then there wouldnt be this big issue with marriage and religion, which is why religions get involved, because marriage is a religious act.
