Chihuahuas are prized for their devotion and personality. Their alertness, intelligence and size make them easily adaptable to a variety of environments, including the city and small apartments. While Chihuahuas are often stereotyped as high-strung, correct training and socialization can result in an outstanding companion animal.

Chihuahuas are not well-suited as small children's pets because of their size and physical fragility. However, many Chihuahuas focus their devotion on one person, becoming overly jealous of that person's human relationships. This can be mitigated through socialization. Chihuahuas also tend to have a "clannish" nature, often preferring the companionship of other Chihuahuas over other dogs. Also, Chihuahuas seem to have no concept of their own size, and may fearlessly confront larger animals, which can result in injury.

Chihuahuas are sensitive to the cold due to their small body size. Chihuahua owners often dress their dogs in sweaters or coats in cold weather.

I had a chihuahua/rat terrier mix and he was one of the best dogs around. He was very easy to train and did not pee all over the place. In my opinion, a good pet is a result of a good owner...teach the dog when it's a puppy to potty train and you can also teach a dog not to bark all the time. Just because it's a small dog doesn't mean it barks alot, pees all over, etc. If you have the time and money, take it to puppy classes so you know you are getting some good training. Good luck!

all dogs make good pets if properly trained. I have 3 Chihuahua's and they are great. Smaller dogs take a little more time to potty train b/c of their smaller bladder they can't hold it as long. They are Territorial meaning they take up for their owner/s. But again it is all in the way you train them. Make sure to socialize your pup often to different surrounding and people and also other dogs. My 3 are great with my cat and my Aussie and also with my husband, myself and our 13 year old, but thinks twice about others that they have never seen... just do some research and make your own best judgment...

Chihauhaus make very good pets. But they are hard to take care of. They need lot`s of attention and care. They are the smallest dogs ever so they need to be dealt with in a gentle way. They also can have many preoblems so be careful. besides that just do your research before you do decide to get one.

Also never buy a chihauhau from someone who says that they sell teacup chihauhaus. there is really no such thing as a teacup chihauhua. If you want to talk you can im me on yahoo sam_gurl_2003@yahoo.com or aim me at riddlesamantha. If you are interested in finding a breeder i also know of some.

Chihuahuas were originally thought to be descendants of an ancient, similar, but slightly larger breed associated with royalty in Aztec civilizations known as the Techichi. However, due to the lack of archaeological remains it is now believed that Chihuahuas were brought to Mexico by Spanish settlers. The most current theory holds that Spanish merchants brought Chihuahuas to Spain by way of their trade routes with China and from there to Mexico. The well documented practice in China of dwarfing both plants and animals is the basis for the theory that Chihuahuas originated there.[citation needed]But another theory is that they originated in Egypt and were traded into Spain and later Mexico.

Chihuahuas were first taken into the United States by American visitors to Mexico.

I love mine. We have always had Chihuahua's (and pugs) You have to teach your kids how to deal with them though. They can be little boogers. They are very protective. My dog right now doesn't want ANY strangers in the house. They are all usually like that and will bark and nip at their heals the entire time. They can be very temperamental. They are fragile so kids cannot carry them around. They shake a lot but that's just the breed. I adore them.

chihuahua's are good pets to those who have the time and energy to take care of them. they are a breed that requires much care because small dogs are never actually potty trained they must be made to go outside every few hours. if you like small dogs but dont like so much barking my suggestion would be to get a palmeranian however you will still deal with alot of unnecissary barking from any small territorial dog

You are going too get lots of ideas and opinions, but may I suggest you go where the chihuahua is and see the chemistry between the two of you. Any animal will make a good pet if it is trained and loved lots....most people don';t have the patience...but a book could be wrote on this subject....I was given one for my 21 birthday, and they are so smart and cute...very easy too train...he said his prayer, sang did all sorts of things...go for it he was a great companion..

I grew up with my grandparents having chihuahua and they were great! Short-haired ones can't handle the cold so if you live in a state where you actually have cold winters, you'll have to make it wear a sweater while going outside to go potty!

They are good pets if you have time to spend with them, they need lots of attention, so if you are gone a lot they are not the dog for you. Also they are very nervous little dogs and not really good with kids.
