I'm gong to New York for 5 days and staying in hostel, is a backpack/rucksack necessary or would a suitcase be ok?

Depends on how much you are going to do. If you are planning to do lots of shopping, then take a case which doesn't contain all that much. Then you can fill it up. If you are just doing sight seeing or whatever, then a rucksack will do. I usually take a case because it can store all my things, and has a combination lock, so valuables can be stored inside. Hostels are usually spacious enough to store both, and also have lockers.

It doesn't really matter, whatever you feel comfortable with afterall it's only 5 days. If you going travelling for say 12 months I'd say a backpack that open out like a suitcase rather than one which you have to pack from the top!
If I did it again I'd just get a big Samsonite bag, so much easier to carry things in.

I would recommend a backpack as opposed to a suitcase. Much easier to travel with. But staying in a hostel doesn't require one versus the other.

Neither is compulsory, use whichever you prefer though bear in mind a rucksack could be easier to carry around and maybe not as heavy checking in at an airport. No rules, please yourself.
