Im going to cook a roast for dinner tonight, Im guessing it weighs a few lbs...I've never cooked a roast in the oven before. How long should I cook it and what temp should I put the oven on? I wanna have it ready by like seven when my boyfriend gets home from work.

You want to cook it per approx 30 mins per pound, so if it is say 3 lbs, roast for an hour and half. Depending on how done/ rare you like it, move up by 15 minutes. 45 mins per pound for well done. I start off by using the roast setting on stove at 350 degrees with foil on top of roast to seal in juices. Take the foil off for last 35 mins at 375 in order to brown a bit. Be sure to let roast rest for at least 20 mins before serving. All that means is leave it alone, no slicing, no touching it. Another good tip is use a meat thermometer to check internal temp. Also, I always salt and pepper both sides of roast before starting in oven. If you like, you can score the roast (make small slits with paring knife) and place pieces of chopped garlic in the slits, and that gives wonderful flavor. Also, another tip is create a rub, mix rosemary, thyme, garlic powder (or whatever herbs you like) together and drizzle in olive oil, then smear this all over both sides of the roast...

Good luck

Pot roast was a standard growing up, and still continues to be in my parent's household. It requires slow cooking over low heat to ensure tender, flavorful meat. This is my mother's method.

3 1/2 lb of beef shoulder or boneless chuck roast
1 Tbsp olive or grapeseed oil
salt, pepper, italian seasoning to taste
1 large yellow onion, chopped or sliced
4 cloves of garlic, peeled
1/2 cup of red wine
Several carrots, peeled and cut lengthwise

1 Use a thick-bottomed covered pot, such as a dutch oven, just large enough to hold roast and vegetables. Heat 1 Tbsp of oil on medium high heat (hot enough to sear the meat). Sprinkle and rub salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning all over the meat. Brown roast in pot, all over, several minutes on each side. Don't move the roast while a side is browning, or it won't brown well.

2 When roast is browned, lift up the meat and add garlic and chopped onion to the bottom of the pan. Let the roast sit on top of the onions. Add 1/2 cup of red wine. Cover. Bring to simmer and the lowest heat possible to maintain a low simmer (we cook our roast on the warm setting of our range)*.

3 Cook for 3 1/2 to 4 hours, until meat is tender. (If you are using a pressure cooker, cut the time by half). Near the end of the cooking, add carrots, cook until tender, about an additional 10 minutes.

After cooking 3 1/2 hours, before adding the carrots. Note how much liquid has been released by the meat. This comes from slow cooking at a very low temperature. If your pot roast is too dry, make sure the pan you are using has a tight fitting lid and that you are cooking at the lowest possible heat to maintain the low simmering.

Serves 4. Suggest serving with green beans and potatoes

The best way to cook a roast in my opinion, is to season the roast and cook place it in a cooking bag, in a baking pan. The cooking bag makes the roast tender and juicy. Oven should be on 350 degrees and cook for 1 hour or until tender.

Forget the oven and cook it this way. It tastes like something your grandmother would have cooked! It won't disappoint you, I promise!

Easy Crockpot Beef Roast

1 chuck or rump Beef Roast (sized for your crockpot; other cuts ok too)
1/2 Cup of Water
1 Packet of Ranch Dressing Mix
1 Packet of Italian Dressing Mix
1 Packet of Brown Gravy Mix

Put roast in crockpot, pour water around the base. Sprinkle all 3 dry seasoning packets over roast. Cover and cook for 6-7 hours on low. Remove roast to cutting board and let sit 15 minutes; slice thinly across the grain (electric knife works best).

It makes great tasting gravy too, that tastes like you browned it and simmered it all day on the stove.

180 degrees C is the temperature needed. Middle shelf.
For time in oven, each 500g needs half an hour. So for a 1.5kg roast allow 1.5-2 hours just in case.
I use olive oil spray on the pan base and put roast meat in fat side down so that'll lubricate the pan and make your house smell delicious.
