I would highly recommend Oban. You can get 10 or 15 YO but go for 20 YO if you can afford it. It is the smoothest malt I have ever had. An alternative would be Macallan, an excellent malt.
Be careful about malts from Islay and Skye (Talisker and Laphroig etc) as they tend to be very Peaty and are almost like TCP in some respects, an acquired taste you might say.

Can't be answered effectively w/o further information.
What have you tried that you like so far? There are SO many variations from the peaty (smoky) Islay to the mellow Lowlands. Personal taste is the governing factor here as shown by the varied responses.
My personal favorite so far is Auchentoshan 3 Wood, a Lowland that gets its name form the fact that 3 different barrels are used for aging.
Regardless of what you choose, it is difficult to buy an irredeemably BAD single-malt for $40 - $60. If you don't like it, it won't be because its a poor Scotch, rather you simply don't like that particular style.

For a change on the next christmas, you should try to buy a
2 litre bottle of Hennessy VSOP. It's very warm and smooth
in taste with a rich and pleasant smell. You can get it from any
local supermarket at the liquor section and the price is slightly
more than you pay for the scottish whisky.
Cheers to you!

If you can get your hands on a bottle of Ballantine's 30 yr old Special Reserve, which for some reason is more available at Xmas for some unknown fact.
Another one I like, when I lived in Alberta Canada, was Grant's Ancient 20, it was suppose to be a private blend of 20 to 40 yr scotchs that were in the Grant Familys private reserve, they do not self it Ontario, well not uless your prepared to buy a whole case.

Why not try an Irish malt, Bushmills is real smoothe with a great rich taste and it is reasonably priced. Go on try something different this year, treat yourself.

I'd recommend Balvinie Founder's Reserve - and if I was far away I'd buy it from

My Dad loved it! God Bless!
It is a lovely smooth and warming whisky - almost like a brandy!

Buy Talisker. It is quite different from the rest and is available at all good off licences.
Price is variable but probably about £18

Glenmorangie has a range of barrel finishes like sherry, burgundy, port, and madeira. They fall around the $45 USD range.
