I think they do because God promised Adam that the DAY he took the fruit would be his last for he would die. Adam did die that day he suffered spiritual death and made himself susceptible to physical death as well... Jim

What makes you think this. I must agree with the one of the commentors above. God says don't do. Adam and Eve do it anyhow. That sounds like misbehaving? In religious terms it is called a sin. What do you view it as "the original error." Then they get in troubled, "humanised" and kicked out of Eden. Since then we no longer live in a paradise (unless we travel to Hawaii) or have utopian lifestyle (unless you are a web 2.0 billionaire).
Kind of makes you wonder why people can't read and try to make it into a better story, doesn't it?

The original sin thing, if I remember correctly, went back to Irenaeus, one of the Ante-Nicean church fathers, and another guy whose name I can't remember. The other guy came up with original sin, to counter Irenaeus' belief that it was indeed possible to lead a sin-free life (for fear that Irenaeus' assertions would make people reject the Church). This later resulted in the creation of limbo, as the infant mortality rate at the time was so high that there needed to a be a place for originally-sinning, unbaptized stillbirths to go.
ETA: Not Irenaeus! It was Pelagius who made the assertion, and good ol' Augustine who insisted on the doctrine of original sin.

The Jews were, and still are mistaken about many things.
Kind of makes you wonder why anybody would want to dwell on the errors of an obsolete belief system.
