So they don't get scratched or stolen. Slice it open with a razor blade side on.

2 main reasons:
1: Prevents people taking a CD out of the case, and thieving it.
2: Makes it easier to clean CDs, should they attract dust, etc.

to stop little scrotes from removing the DVD, CD etc from the case and making off with it leaving the next person to purchase an empty box.

to make it harder for the CDs to be stolen out of their cases, but they could waste a lot less plastic if they kept the CDs in reusable plastic cases that need some sort of device to open them.

It makes it so that you can see that nobody has opened it and stolen the DVD and left the case. So, you don't have to buy something and find it missing when you get home.

The point is so that you can't easily get into it. So that people don't open them in-store and steal the CD/DVD...
