He changed his name immediately after the Liston fight, Feb 25, 1964. But he did NOT change it to Muhammad Ali. He first called himself Cassius X, announcing himself as a member of the Nation of Islam, and following the convention of such members as Malcom X. Soon afterward, the leader of the Nation of Islam, Elijah Muhammad (that nut job) gave hime the name Muhammad Ali.
