Is it appropriate to give a gift to the baby? I heard that godparents are expected to buy the baptism, but heard from someone else that this isn't the case. I am very unfamilliar with the rituals and customs of the church. Any guidance would be appreciated.

The role of the godparents is very important. They must be firm Catholic believers, able and ready to help the newly baptized—child or adult—on the road of Christian life.

To ensure this, a godparent must be at least 16 years old (for maturity's sake), fully initiated (having received Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist), be someone other than the legal parents, and one who leads a life in harmony with the Church.

The Church does not require that the godparents be responsible for any material items at the Baptism. Although local custom or tradition may.

With love in Christ.

You don't buy a Baptism. It is up to the Godparents if they wish to give a gift to the baby or make a donation to the church where the service is performed. Materialism has no place where with God.

The godparents don't pay for anything, they just attend the mass. It is also entirely up to you if you want to give a gift (which is nice) to the baby.

Congratulations on being Godmother. What an honor. Back in my day, the Godmother bought the baby christening clothes. The parents gave the donation and gave the party. And have a good time!
