There is a number of waste to energy plants across the country where municipal solid waste is combusted to create electricity:
Teeside - 1, Southhampton - 2, London - 2/3, to name as many as i can off the top of my head.

Also there are many more in the pipeline, and there would be significantly more if it wasn't for narrow minded daily mail reading nimbyists that live in the UK.

Also nearly every non-hazardous landfill in the country (that accepts municipal solid waste) uses the methane it creates in gas engines to create electricty to sell on the national grid which is a kind of waste to energy.

I don't think we will see the likes of the incinerators in Holland however once the landfill directives tightening controls start happening we will see less and less landfills and much more other technologies such as waste to energy plants.

grundon waste management have an incinerator at colnbrook near heathrow. and a waste company in portsmouth also has an incinerator.
there are plans that they will sell excess energy created by the plant to the national grid.

Several - I know of at least two in London, in Edmonton (near Ikea) and Charlton (near the stadium).
