i want to help him with school work, but he fidgets and generally messes about. How can i help him when he cant even sit still

altho i recieved some genuinely handy tips off this, i was suprised by some v strong personal opinions-not sure if thats wot i bargained for. My son does not have adhd, he eats healthily, he sleeps well, he started school at 3 and is learning 2 languages, its just that id like to know how to help get the best out of his study time, less fuss means its done quicker with less frustrations on both parts.
But to those parents who gave genuine helpful advice, thanks, i will try omega and fish oils. :D

He is a little boy, and even my two girls I couldn't get them to sit still. Do work in little increments of time (say about 5 - 10 minutes) then let him run around and get his energy spent. Always worked for my kids (and both A+ students now that they are in middle and high school)

I still have this problem with my 10 year old! He's getting lazy taking his fish oils but I do notice a difference when he does. It's not easy being a working mum but when I get a chance to be home when he gets back from school I always make sure he gets a little time to play, then have a snack and study before he gets too tired.

Most of us are guilty of feeding our kids too much junk even though we know we shouldn't.

Try to stick to healthy snacks and food, a treat once in a while is ok but don't overdo it. Icelandic parents joined up years ago to protest all the sweets the kids were eating day in and day out and now they are only allowed to have sweets on Saturdays and it seams to be working all around the country.

Patience is very important as I'm sure you know but it's also very important to stick to the rules that are set.
Does a 5 year old really have to do homework?

i would'nt worry too much about that yet! a child can only concentrate for 1 min per year of there age!! and just think he is only 5! when he has been at school allday working he wants to come home and play not have to work more! but try making his work fun and praise praise praise all the time when he is doing his home wrk! in schools they do what you call ''braingym'' this is where you teach for 5 or 10 mins then let the child relax, let him stand and walk around or simple things like touching his nose it relax's the brain to be able them to concentrate again.

i don't agree with 5 year old getting home work anyway
good luck hope this helps

Dear lord. He's 5. 10 minutes is the max these littlies can stand. Check out all the other answers, most of them have good ideas. Remember, children are what YOU make them......
Have a long hard look in the mirror! It can be quite scary, if you're honest with yourself.
Good nutrition, sleeping for at least 9 hours a night and minimal TV/video games.

I have just put both my children on Omega 3 oil capsules for children. These oils are supposed to aid in concentration and improve the brain function. They have undertaken studies in the UK and both parents and teachers agree they work.
If this fails see your doc it could be he has a attention disorder, nothing to worry about will just explain why he has trouble keeping still.
At the end of the day anything you do proves you are a responsible parent who cares deeply for their child. Believe me, I work in a school and caring parents are few and far between.
Good Luck x

What works for us is to turn off the tv during home work time. Make sure he has had a snack and gone potty. Keep the distractions to a minimum and keep the studying time short - say 15 minutes or so. Make sure he has his supplies handy - crayons and pencil. And praise him highly when he completes a task.

less TV
less pop
less sugar
less "red" drinks (the dye causes hyper behavior)
less meat, particularly less red meat (again dyes, hormones, chemicals which create hyper behavior)

kids TV shows often create short attention spans becuase they cater to kids with short attention spans it doesnt help the kids to improve.. TV jumps too much - some show - some commericals.. etc so this needs to be removed or cut down

studies have shown that kids exposed to nature do remarkably well in concentration studies - so more walks in the park, more time in the back yard looking at bugs... playing in a pond together - etc - hands on with nature...

I would recommend that you start providing him with Omega 3 each day. There are numerous sources available that will confirm the benefit of Omega 3, in my experience it will help your child concentrate and if there are any behavioural problems will help in this regard too.

I have the same problem with my 5 year old, i went to his 'target setting day' at his school yesterday and the teacher said he was the same at school and together we decided what he needs to concentrate on, you should speak to his teacher and then he will learn that what happens at school happens at home too and hopefully will start concentrating more (that is what i am hoping anyway!!) Good Luck!
