I've made a routing slip in Word 2002 with Text Form Fields, Check boxes, etc.

I've protected it.

now, when you're typing in a text field, you can't go to Insert Menu ---> Symbol. It's grayed out.

As soon as I un-protect it, it shows up. How can I make it work while it's protected?

You can set the document protection to :Tracked Changes: which will let you to enter symbols etc. Otherwise, there is no way to insert symbols !!!

Alternatively you can pre-type the comments and then copy-paste them. Hope this helps.
