McIntosh apples are a softer apple, and not commonly used in making pies. Apples used in baking need to be firm, so they won't turn to much during the baking process.

McIntosh apples are great for eating out of hand and making applesauce. Firmer apples, like Golden Delicious, Granny Smith & Pink Ladies are better for baking.

RE:
Can mcintosh apples be used for apple pies?

There are various types of apples to use, i find that using a tart crisp apple like a granny smith works best. Mixing a tart apple with the cinnamon and sugar makes for a pie that is not too sweet, but just right, plus the pectin in the apple makes the juices thick like a jam. An apple like a red delicious or something soft won't keep its shape in the pie and will get mushy. Good Luck!

McIntosh apples are one of the preferred cooking apples - but not the best choice for pies as they tend to melt down too fast. See the attached chart for some ideas on what to do with McIntosh and which apple is best for baking.
Good luck

I think any apple can. But here are the top 13

Here's a baker's dozen that are available in most areas of the country: Baldwin, Braeburn, Cortland, Crispin (also known as Matsu), Fuji, Granny Smith, Greening, Jonathan, Northern Spy, Pippin, Rome Beauty, Russet and Stayman Winesap

Absolutely. My favorite recipe is with Granny Smiths and Gala's, but any apple will do. However, whenever I use Red Delicious, they turn the consistency of applesauce in the pie. Macintosh's should be okay, though.

I've used mcintosh and the pie comes out delicious. Before putting my top crust on, I drop small pieces of butter or margarine and add more cinnamon on the filling.
