There are loads in and around the Sultan Ahmet district.
There's a hostel (I've not stayed there but friends have and liked it) just near the Aya Sofia.
Below Sultan Ahmet Camii (The Blue Mosque) there are several small pansiyons (like a B & B) in the area of the Mosaic Museum.
There are also some good boutique hotels in that area if your budget can stretch that far.
If you stay in the vicinity you'll save money on taxis or public transport because there's so much to see within easy walking distance, there are also masses of cheap restaurants.
Istanbul is a fantastic city. Have a great time!

Fidget gave really good information about the Old City. Additionally you should also try the 3 or 4 star hotels in Taksim area which is the city center. You can find many nice hotels with reasonable prices.

Hotel Erboy is excellent - great breakfast buffet, very clean with AC (not that you'll need it in a few weeks) with a fantastic view from the top floor. It is only a 5 minute walk from Aya Sofya (Haghia Sofia), Topkapi Palace and Sultanahmet (Blue Mosque)

First, go to http://tripadvisor.com for reviews from other travelers.
Then, go to http://Luxe.worldventures.com They search all the other main sites like Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, hotel and airline sites and offer you the lowest price. You’ll save even more when you book it as a package like air and hotel together.
