Both adults and children can suffer from TMD, thermo mandibular disorder, more commonly known as TMJ. The joint in the jaw is disfunctioning and many times there is not known cause. It is not a form of mental retardation.

Got to webmd.com and put in TMD. You will have a lot of reading to do.
