im 19years old, about 5ft 7 and weigh just over 12 stone. i have been dieting and exercising for almost a year now and i havent noticed any cahnges. other than being extremely annoying and upsetting, this has also made me lose my motivation, as what i was doing clearly isnt working. does anyone have ideas or advice they can give to help me lose weight? my mum suggested i go to the doctor incase theres a medical reason.........??

did you know that muscle weighs more than fat? so if you've done loads of exercise and feel that you should've lost weight but you weigh the same or more then i guess this will be why. perhaps your GP would know if there was a medical reason for this. i weigh just over 11 stone, i'm the same height as you but i'm 24 i've been trying for about the last year to lose some wieght and instead i've toned up and not changed my weight.

the best exercise anyone can do is swimming as it works on every muscle in your body. try it if you feel confident enough. it's hard not to lose motivation though if you're not seeing instant results, it makes you think "why bother" but i always tell myself - Rome wasn't built in a day! Stick at it, it'll be worth it in the end.

Your mother is right you should see your GP to put her and your mind at rest.
In my experience GP's dole out in the same advice as most magazines, TV programmes and newspapers. If you are lucky enough to be referred to a dietian---- say thank you and go, they are smart people with a sound knowledge base.
Like many others on this page I will remind you that if you have been exercising you will be building muscles, muscles weigh more than fat----but muscles are far more useful because --they give your body a sharper shape, improve your strength and raise your metabolic rate--- thus increasing your ability to lose those pesky pounds. Exercise strenthens the heart--- very good news for your long term well being.

Group support can help so do not over look groups like weight-watchers both male and females can find friends who will support and encourage each other.
Are you exercising alone?
Maybe you could join others, you will find few of us humans find healthy weight loss a breeze.
Do not let scales discourage you. My mother allowed herself to become discouraged when the pounds failed to drop off every week she has recently become a heart attack statistic.
Exercise and weight management are two of the most important elements in a sensible persons regular routine.
Lighten up you are wonderfully young in years and if you want a long and healthy life your efforts at exercising and weight management are a step in the right direction.

Medical reasons are statistically unlikely. The blunt answer is that you are eating too much! Keep a food diary, be honest with yourself. Write down everything that you eat and drink over the course of a week. Dont forget to write approximate portion sizes. Once you have done that, spend some time going through the diary and do a rough calculation of the calorie value of what you are eating. Then cut down on all the sugary drinks, the high fat snacks (crisps and savory nibbles), and aim to reduce the total calories each day by 500cals. If you do this HONESTLY and still do not lose weight, see your doctor.

I find it difficult to believe that you haven't noticed any changes at all. Even if you haven't lost any fat, which, of course, isn't the same as losing weight, you must be fitter and feel better.

I suspect you aren't exercising strenuously enough. After a year of working out, you should be doing a LOT more than you were when you started out. If you're not, that could be part of your problem.

Also, take a look at your diet again. Cut out as much saturated (animal based mainly) fat as possible and as try to illiminate as much refined sugar as possible. Get your carbohydrates from fruit and vegetables and complex carbohydrates like whole grains, potato and sweet potato.

I have no idea whether you're male or female but if you're not doing weight training, you should be and don't worry about growing big muscles if you're female - it will just tone you up and put on a little muscle. Muscle tissue burns fat (calories) even at rest, so it's good to carry a little more muscle.

Hi Cheeky!

I am 99% sure that the reason is that you are averaging too many consumed calories per day.

Once you figure out your BMR, consume that many calories and keep exercising. You should see results within a week if you adhere to the calorie amount and don't binge.

Muscle weighs more than fat. Weight isn't the only thing to take into account. If you have lost fat, and gained muscle, your weight may even go up, even though your % of body fat has gone down. Have your body fat % checked and you can use that as a more accurate measurement of your progress. Oh yeah, and for god's sake, don't even look at the BMI. It's a load of crap. According to the BMI, if I was 185 I would be overweight, even though at 185 (with the amount of muscle I have) I would be 3% body fat (which is reserved for VERY FIT ATHLETES).

I think your mom has some good advice. Go to the doctor tell him that you would like some help losing weight. You could see a nutritionist as well. I found that eating healthy and just keeping active worked for me. I tried not to stress about it so much. Stress can make you gain weight, so if you're stessing out over losing weight you;re woking againsed yourself!!

You might think about trying this book called "The Movie Star Diet" by Steve Simmons. It helped me lose thirty pounds in 2 1/2 months when I didn't think anything would work. My goal to begin with was only 20 lbs! It has a really easy plan to follow and an excellent workout to use as well.

well the question is yah you havent noticed any change but if you have been working out for a year and you have been doing the wrong type of workouts for losing weight then you gained weight in muscle, it could be as simple as changing your exercise routine, but i dont know what that is. Let's put it this way iam 5'8 and 190 pounds YOU CANNOT tell iam 190 pounds it is muscle mass, from training for football.
