The PrintScreen key copies the contents of your screen to the Windows Clipboard. To save it to a file, open a new document in Word or the Windows Paint application, then paste in the screen capture from the Clipboard by pressing CTRL-V.
Holding down the ALT key while you press PrintScreen copies the active window instead of the whole screen.
If you want more options, try the freeware Gadwin Print Screen application - you can get it here:

In addition to that, if you hold down the Alt key while you are pressing the print screen key, you can capture just the top most or active window.
