I am a 38 year old graduate and thinking of starting up a private tuition business where I can teach GCSE subjects to teenagers in the comfort of their home or ask them to travel to my home. Do you think this type of business would be quite profitable or do you think it would not be worth the hassle i.e. having to travel to different places many times a day.

Please advice.

I did this for a year and after about 3 months had to turn clients away because I couldn't fit anymore in. I didn't advertise as word of mouth did a fantastic job for me. It's just hard to set it up in the first few months, but I put an ad on www.gumtree.com.

I don't do it anymore as I'm doing my MA and I don't have the time.

Whether or not its profitable, yes as in you will make more money than you spend. The costs are only petrol and the books you buy. I would let clients know which books to get and buy a copy for myself. I wouldn't give copies to clients because the cost is huge. However, not sure you will live well on tutoring alone. I charged £23/hour up to GCSE and £25 for AS/A2 level students. I also gave discounts for prepaying for ten lessons, or having more than one hour. EG, two hours= £40. It sounds like good money but remeber that school kids don't come home until 3.30pm at the earliest, then the latest you can realistically finish a lesson is 8pm (which is still a bit late, I only tried doing sessions 7 till 8 once and decided it didn't work as he was tired and grumpy!) If you travel in between then you can do a maximum of 2 sessions per evening. So by my fees that's £46 per night or £230 a week. Take out petrol, and don't forget tax or they'll sting you for it. It's not gonna make you rich.

However, as a suplimentary income, it was useful, and I really enjoyed doing it. GCSE results day was a nightmare as I was soooo nervous but so proud of each student I taught so it is worth doing.

BTW, I was tutoring in SW London, I don't think you'd get away with these prices in other areas!

This is my experience of tutoring and you might find it different, buthopefully I've helped you a bit? Good luck with it.
