I just bought a laptop and the 30 day trial for Norton has just expired. I don't really want to pay for a renewal since a friend told me there are plenty of free virus protection services out there that you can simply download for free. I am in europe so I download a lot of american tv to watch and i know that downloading can be the source of a lot of viruses. Anybody know where to get good, cheap protection....for the computer ;)?

Go to www.download.com and search for AVG, it's a pretty good free one.

I have used AVG Free edition for several years, I install it on everyone's computer that I know, and none of them have ever had a virus problem while running this software. The program is small, gets regular updates, and is very reliable. I highly recommend it.

New in AVG 7.5
* Improved virus detection based on better heuristics and NTFS data streams scanning
* Smaller installation and update files
* Improved user interface
* Windows Vista ready
* and more

What you get with AVG Anti-Virus Free
yesEasy to use
yesRegular and automatic virus database updates
yesRealtime protection of files and e-mails
yesScheduled and manual testing
yesWindows and Linux
yesAnd most of all ... great customer satisfaction!

What you do not get
noAnti-Spyware
noAnti-Spam
noFirewall
no24/7 Technical Support
noPriority updates
noMultiple languages
noDetailed settings
noConsent for commercial use

I've been using Avast for the last 2 years or so and it's never let me down. It's actually better than Norton. Go here and get the free version if you like
http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html
You should get some antispyware programs too
Ad-aware

Spybot Search & Destroy

A squared free

Arovax shield stops things installing on your PC that you don't want

You should get a firewall too if you don't have one installed. Kerio personal firewall is good

Trend Micro's PC-cillin. It will find viruses and malware that Norton, McAfee and the free programs miss.
