Your body becomes "tone" by losing weight. Tone is a horrible term. Anyway, whatever will burn the most calories for you will help you to achieve your goal. You want to burn calories to lose weight.

There are different programs like HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) where you go at a basic pace for a certain amount of time, then a high-intensity pace, then back down to the basic pace and repeat this cycle for a certain amount of time. Or you might want to start a weight lifting program, which will help maintain muscle and help increase bone density. Which is great for women, seeing as how they're more prone to osteoporosis. And don't worry, lifting weights will not make you BIG and BULKY. In order to get big and bulky, you have to consume a lot more calories for your muscles to be able to grow. Lifting weights will not make your muscles grow out of control, because if that was the case, every woman that lifted weights in gym would be HYOOGE!!. And speaking of diet...

What you want to really do is watch your diet while training. If your diet isn't in check, all your hard work will be for nothing. You want to keep protein up (to help maintain muscle), fats and carbs there, just not in excess. Your body needs energy to function, don't think depriving yourself of food will get quicker results. Just watch calorie intake and stick to healthy foods.

I just read something yesterday about working out hard for 30 seconds then resting for 4 minutes. Doing this for about 6-8 times. That gives you the same effect as working out at a slower pace for 60-90 minutes at a slower pace. It came from Dr. Weil's website if you are interested. http://www.drweil.com/drw/ecs/index.html

Exercise that pushes your heart rate closest to your targeted heart rate is the most suitable exercise to get rid of fat. You should exercise with sufficient intensity to raise your pulse rate, which in turn speeds up the fat loss process. The exercises that bring your heart rate close to your targeted heart rate will boost your metabolism, which will lead to fat loss.Besides, making you look better, weight loss offers hosts of other health benefits. When you reduce 10-15% of your weight, your chances of suffering from heart attack, diabetes as well as cholesterol levels go down. Hence if you are thinking of getting started, the best time to get started is now.Commitment is the most crucial factor to get any exercise program started.

I would say 45 minutes 4 times per week.
By the way, the most efficient type of excercise is swimming: you burn many calories and you tone your whole body.

Definitely at least 30 minutes per workout, at least three times per week. Ideally, you would want to mix cardio and weights.
