My female registered St. Bernard (which has been okayed by a vet to be completely healthy) is in heat. She is 2 1/2 years old and we have a male also that we are breeding with her. (He's 2 1/2 years old, but they are not related, we have a pedagree on both and a clean bill of health on him also!) What will be her most fertile time during her heat? This is the first time we have tried to breed either one of them, and we just want 1 litter of pups, and then we are going to get them fixed.

I would say keep them together in the same enclosed area for a couple of days. The entire time she is in heat, she is fertile.

Just because these two dogs are not ill, it does not mean they should be bred.

Hopefully, you have had their hips x-rayed and OFA certified and have researched both pedigrees to be sure there is no history of hip displaysia in their gene pools.

Then you should make sure you have two excellent representatives of your breed. This is normally done by showing your dog in corformation or competing in some other dog sport and showing exceptional quality.

However, I don know that many people do just study the standard for their breed and judge for themselves, and preferrably with the help of other more knowledgable people within the breed fancy, the quality of their dogs.

Now, generally, a ***** will come into heat for about a week before ovulation and peak fetility is reach between day 7 and day 14. However, nature does not always go by the books and your female may concieve anywhere from day 5 to day 17.

Please be sure you know what you are getting into with this "project", make sure you at least have a knowledgable source to turn to in case you have any difficulties with your dogs and possible puppies.

The most fertile time will be toward the end of her second week. Around days 10-14. Good luck with the breeding and hope everything goes okay!

You would know this information if you were a breeder, you should not be breeding if you aren't, like it was said before you should be breeding to better the breed not to see puppies being born, before you breed I suggest going to the shelter and seeing all the homeless pets and watching euthanasia's and then see if you want to bring more animals into the world that can end up like that.

So your VET said they were healthy?????? Did you have hip and elbow x-rays done????????
http://www.offa.org/stats.html#breed

You look there and you will see that of the Saints that are evaluated for hip dysplasia...46.7% are ABNORMAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That means DYSPLASTIC!!!! And those dogs SHOULD NOT be used for breeding!! Those dogs becomeing part of the breeding pool wiill furthur WEAKEN your breed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BE smart abd get the clearances!!!!!!!!!!! Otherwise you are a puppies-for-profit-backyard-breeder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And if you have little or no knowledge about breeding, why do it. Get the health clearances and do some research, then proceed!
