My favorite method is to put out one line with a large minnow or chub, hooked through the lips, under a bobber, fished a foot or so over the bottom. Then, I cast most any flashy lure like a bomber, or spoon. If and when the bobber goes under, Let the fish take all the line they want. When then bobber stops 10-20 feet from where the fish started- set the hook. Gives them time to swalow the bait.

Find bays with weedbeds, and throw some larger size 5 & 6 Mepps, or some large spoons. One of my most favorite northern pike gear is the top water spinning frog. I would definately get yourself 3 or 4 of these top water buzz bait frog type of lures, always use a steel leader.

I usually don't waste my time with those slimy hammer handles. All they ever do is make a mess in my boat. Don't get me wrong, they're fun to catch but I usually don't rig for them. I'm not sure if there's a particular way to rig for northerns as they'll bite on just about every presentation you can put in front of them. They're a predator fish so they'll bite on anything that irritates them or looks like food.

im not an expert on pike but in small ponds and rivers I catch panfish(especially sunfish) and cast them to a fallen tree or lily pads. At farrar pond i catch alot of big pike doing that.

Ditto what glen said about the areas, I use a treble hook and medium sized minnows. Stick the minnow on one hook about a third of the way up the minnow and toss it in.

I enjoy it this way because I then have time to help my kids with their worms and bobbers, or just open a good paperback.

You know to have a spreader handy, right?

Good Luck!

it depends on where you fish but for me i drift and cast over weedbeds, troll along dropoffs, or use live bait. i find casting produces the most fish while trolling gets bigger ones.
