Thats too risky! Music is the highlight of the night at a wedding for the guests. Just hire a DJ.

This is just for all you crazy people. I was doing research and one terribly expensive wedding reception venue (can't remember which now) included the price of an ipod hookup to their speaker system. Its just the way of the future I think. Why need someone chatting in between tracks when you can have a night of seemless music that you KNOW you will enjoy every minute of cuz you decided on it before hand.
I think its a great idea as long as you put enough effort into it. If you need it for 5 hours have at least 100 songs - at approximately 3 minutes each that should do. Always have more though in case. Perhaps it would be an idea to slot them into relevent play lists. I.e. Arrival, background music, special dances and normal dancing just to make it clear to the person who is watching the Ipod.
All the best and Goodluck.

Wow, some of these answers are ridiculous and really unhelpful! Hello people, a wedding doesnt have to be $22,000! I firmly believe that if you put enough time and consideration into it you can cut so many corners on wedding costs. So in your case consider exactly how the reception will go and put it on a time line (i.e. first dance, father daughter dance, mother son dance, dinner, dancing, cutting the cake, dessert, garter toss, etc.) and find music that matches that specific event. Oldies (frank sinatra, frankie vallie, etc.) can be good during dinner, some classic rock songs are favorites at weddings, mix in a few beautiful slow love songs and you will be good to go.
Would a wedding be better with a professional DJ? probably, but it would probably also be better if you took a month long European cruise afterwards...if only we could all be so lucky! Work with what you have and dont let people make you feel bad for not going all out and spending money that is better spent on a downpayment for a house!

How people are little harsh on the ipod idea..... I am getting a DJ but you might want to appoint a friend to do the announcements, bouquet toss and garter belt, plus cutting the cake. I would just fill up the Ipod with lots of extra songs for just in case.
You got the bride groom dance
Father and daughter dance
Groom and Mother dance
And then eating music
and DANCING
I would just over fill it and have the person switch if over to the dance music when the dinner is done. It's hard to tell because all receptions are different and broken up differently.

To all you naysayers...
First of all, not every bride has a big freakin party at her wedding.
Second, an ipod is a perfectly fine way of handling the music since you can set up songs lists ahead of time and it requires less maintenance.
My husband is a DJ and he uses his ipod and a laptop to put together his song lists. It makes for very easy transitions and set up. If someone wants to request something he just inserts it into the play list instead of fumbling with a bunch of Cds and making sure you've got the right track etc..
5 hours of music at about 3 minutes a song (on average) is 100 songs.

I think using an ipod is fine as long as someone is in charge of controlling it and making announcements. I don't care at all about a dj and I think that at most weddings the dj is more just annoying. I like the person that told you to grow up- because really maturity means being able to hire a dj. What an asshat.

That would be a BAD idea not to have a professional DJ. Your wedding reception will look cheap and trashy and you have to have speakers and someone to make announcements. The DJ makes all the announcements and gets people on the dance floor. You need a DJ or band.

Crikey, like how tight are you?!?
Hire a freaking DJ, make sure the fella has a good idea of all the types of music that you and your spouse enjoy and dont forget to sneakily find out your spouses favourite song if you dont already know it. Using a Ipod as a DJ, whatever next, doing all the catering using microwave ovens? :p

How will you have a grand entrance, father/daughter, mother/son...etc...dance(s) and announcements. I would definitely not use an ipod instead of a dj. Even a bad dj would be better than an ipod.
