When I am travelling by bus I have to leave early. I sometimes carry something for breakfast. At the stops, the food is not good and I get hungry long before that. So I eat on the bus while reading a book. Try it, even if it is a magazine, it looks cool. And if you are doing two things at once, you forget about the others. But keep your handbag close.

It could be any number of things...but after many decades of observing humanity, I'm prone to think it's because of deep-seated insecurities.

I used to be nearly 80 pounds heavier and detested eating out. I just knew everyone was whispering about what and how much I was eating. When, actually, the only one judging me was myself.

The solution? Check out a book on etiquette from the library or buy one....read it thoroughly and practice (at home) what it tells you. Once you form exemplary habits, you will no longer feel self-conscious.

As for the color of your skin......be proud that you're one of the few in your area and that you stand out. Who knows, they may be staring at you because you're gorgeous!! When you have all the excellent social skills, what a glorious sight you'll be!!

Some people might feel people are judging them on how they are eating, what they are eating, or how much they are eating. As well, I know some people who HATE eating in public alone, as if it makes them look like they have no friends. Personally, I always keep a book in my bag anyway, so if I'm by myself, I still have something to do :) By the way, Jackie O once said you should never be caught chewing in public...maybe some people have taken that to heart!

Best Regards,
Holly

It has nothing to do with being stared at because you're an Afro-Canadian. People who don't like to eat in public only feel that way for one of two reasons...because they are a slob, and are embarrassed when other people notice that they are a messy eater, with no manners, or...because they are repulsed by watching other people eat, because the other people are slobs!

I think if someone has insecurities about themselves they feel vulnerable when they let their guard down to eat. Similar to wild animals who often drag their prey to a more private area to eat.

How to get over it? Relax, everyone eats, no one has perfect manners.... find some way to make it a pleasurable experience.

Practice going to restaurants by yourself. Take something to read or a note pad to doodle on, if you aren't ready to eat just order a soda and watch people, the wait staff, the room.... take it all in and make yourself comfortable with your surroundings.

My sister had this problem. I used to just sit in the car and eat with her. She could never give a reason why she couldn't eat in public. Just said it made her uncomfortable. Well, I got tired of it and just started leaving her in the car alone. I quess she finally got tired of sitting in the car and watching all of us having a good time.....then one day she jus got out and went inside...now you can't keep her in the car....she won't use drive through anymore!! Good Luck!!

People don't like to eat in public because they get judged based on food on their face or in their teeth, their weight, or chewing with their mouth open or even food choices.
You overcome it by using a napkin in between bites, think about chewing with your mouth closed and maybe monitoring portion sizes while in public. Sometime people stare because they feel like you are staring at them! To be comfortable in public, block out those around you. Don't focus on them, focus on your food.

I can't eat with strangers & certain people I know but this is down to their eating habits like talking with mouth full or licking their fingers and worst of all that horrible chomping noise when they eat.
I rarely eat out anymore only at home.

Because they feel like people are staring at them while
they eat. Sometimes I feel this way in a restaurant.

Maybe they lack proper etiquette, or maybe they aren't familiar with the restaurant and its environment. My husband don't like to eat out because of possible dangers of getting poisoned as well as not being served to his satisfaction.
