There are a few basic questions you need to ask first, like the following:

- Whats my price range ?

- What are my space limitations ?

- Am I currently or willing to suscribe to a high definition cable provider ?

Anwsers:

If you have tons of money, and a open wall or flat area, not very deep, and your willing to go hi-def, by all means your in the plasma market. Plasma screens have one negative trait, that is that they 'burn in' when left on the same image for a long period of time the image may be "burnt" onto the sccreen.

if you dont have much money, and not much space, not willing to go hi-def then you are going to want a lcd projector or an lcd. Lcd's are small but are really great. If you want a tv for the kitchen under the cabinet I recomend an LCD. Now, the Lcd Projectors are really awesome. Basically, with a 1 foot sq footprint you can get upto a 100" screen.

Now if your extremely cheap, not limited to space, and dont want cable go with a traditional crt tv. Due to all the other competing technologies the prices of traditional CRT TV's is dropping significantly.

Overall Heres how the tv's stack up:
1. Plasma (Watch for burn in)
2. LCD
3. LCD Projector (More Lumens = Better)
4. Micro Display
5. Good Ol' Crt

I recommend shopping around online, have a screen size picked out, know your space requirements and your price range. I have listed a few great resources below.

i personally have a hitachi plasma. had it for nearly 3 yrs. plasma tvs dont last as long as lcd as far as burning hrs. but they are up to nearly 50,000 hrs now. when i bought mine it was like 12,000 hrs. somethin else is gonna most likely go wrong b-4 the lamp hrs go anyway. buy plasma. panasonic th42px60u is an awesome tv or the toshiba 42hp66 comes in at a really good price. buy hd not ed. not a big difference in price now. also stay away from lg. i know some recommended them, but forget them. i say buy from REX TV AND APPLIANCE since i am a gen. mgr of 1 of the stores because we gurantee the price stronger, and u can get really good help from our professional sales people. also buy maintenance. no matter what u buy they all break

What ever you get make sure it has a QAM and an ATSC tuner in it. QAM will let you decode unscrambled cable channels(at no extra charge), and ATSC will allow you to recieve terrestrial channels for FREE. The FCC will force all T.V. and radio stations to cease all analog transmissions on Feb. 17th 2009 (that date has changed at least three times so dont freak out too much) and without one of those features on your tv you will have to buy an external one, or get that digital cable box for $100 a month. And the cable companies are betting that you wont buy your set with a tuner built into it and have to pay the extra fee. You have to go to this web site before you buy.
