I read on Yahoo News today that scientists are on the verge of creating an invisibility cloak. Now WHY would anyone want to do that is my question??

Is it because we haven't discovered enough ways to hide guns from being smuggled in or dangerous goods or bombs or terrorists?? My, my, my, I just cant wait till the bad guys get ahold of THAT technology.

Sweety the media puts stray thoughts into the minds of evil every day....not like they wouldn't think of it on their own. Nothing good comes out of something that can be used for potential evil.

There are some things that serve potential no purpose and have no value to mankind. I believe this is one of them. Of course, one will always find uses, but did we really need guns or atom bombs and look what's come to hit us in the azz as a result of them. Now we can hide and cloak a vehicle on a road and smash into it, or fly airplanes into one another...just see no real use or value for it.

So basically from everyone's answers, it's a military device, or that is what it would be used for. Good...more war toys. We sure don't have enough of those.

Oh come on James B, you know that certain countries "rule" the world because of their military clout and when that power is weakened, will resort to any and all measures to always have the upper hand. How fickle the man willing to sacrifice it all for such blind and foolish causes which accomplish what in the end...nothing. I'd rather have a bleeding heart than an empty spot in bed and 5 hungry children.

I don't understand? That is like saying, "Why would anyone want to create a hair dryer?" People invent for the reason of inventing. It is like the old saying, why climb a mountain. Because it is there. inventions are just things that are there. I understand what you are saying about people getting a hold of that technology, but honestly, do you really feel that safe whether they have it or not? If they want to get a bomb into the us, they will easily be able to do it. Our security has more holes in it than a mile long block of Swiss cheese. Besides, it is one working prototype that can hide a copper cylinder about the size of a pen. Our government won't even try to corrupt it until it can hide a full missile, that way our arms deals can go down better.

First off I want to give a thumbs up to Rawlyn for actually reading the article.

They are not anywere near developing a cloaking device. Based on the pictures they showed you would need a device the size of a small school bus to make a person invisible to a single frequency wave. Specifically microwaves in ths case.

I really feel for all you bleading heart types that can't see beyond your "The military wants everything" blinders.

This experiment showed that a microwave could be bent around an object. What if the microwave was a radiation source, and the object was a cancer patients heart. Pinpoint delivery of life saving treatment.

I can imagine a computer with no wires running at the speed of light as this technology makes a transistor on a microchip obsolete.

This may have some military application, but so does everything else. Perhaps computers that guide missiles to there targets should not have been developed, or the diesel fuel that tanks run on should not have been created. The list could go on and on.

Technology will develop, and continue to develop, and we can't stop moving forward just because a few people are scared that the BIG BAD MILITARY might do something with it.

What difference does it make? I mean bombs guns and weapons are still being smuggled with or without in invisibility cloak... It can actually be very very useful for certain things... although I think scientists should work on something else, like a time machine... :-D Anyways if these cloaks become on sale, I am soo gonna buy one.. But i am puzzled on how exactly they work..

Science is behind on that one.. Witches and Mystics and Magicians use black lights and fog
and spinning motion to create a cloaking around
an object.. If U had black lights on in your house in every room I and the curtains open I bet no one would be able to see your house from outside if it was night. Maybe just the outside lights if they were black lights might blot
out your house from view! As for Science it does go too far on many things and not far enough on things it should do such as things to kept the planet pollution free! I only answer one question per 2 points.

Of course that's for military purpose ... imagine the potential for camouflage ...

Likely you may find some civil application ... imagine an conservatory without wall
On in the games industry you can create a labyrinth with an invisible structure ...
what about fashion ... I'm sure designers will imagine some nice invisible outfit.

espionage/and to the good checking habitats on newly discovered planets so as to not be recognized to cause fret or war with a alien race due to our past record of being wreck lace and destroy all of us !this would give us the chance to see if an environment is hostile too!
two things come to mind star trek but also war of the worlds - 2 pts in the later microbial infections and hostility
of co - existing in a new planetary enviroment.

I do not think scientist think out the consciences of the their actions all the time. I can tell you that it will have huge military applications and probably even business use also. But like you said if it falls into the wrong hands it could be detrimental to the safety of everyone.

Technology is always pushing forward.

And being "invisible" would be a holy grail for many groups of people....or at least the military and crooks.

Like anything good it has the potential for abuse. Just think of all the good things it could be used for though...Cloak our soldiers in battle....Secret service protection of the president. Covert operations etc...

There are always pros and cons to everything. You have definately shown us the cons.....
I think they are creating it so they can walk into locker rooms and see people naked.
Or maybe they are just very much into Harry Potter.
I would want one just so I could go and knock the crap out of people I don't like and they wouldn't know it was me.
