It means that you shouldn't judge someone without all of the facts first.

If you see someone who looks like a mean person, give them the benefit of the doubt and go up and talk to them, THEN make up your mind if they are mean or not.

It is kind of like saying, don't judge a book by it's cover.

It means that you're not sure that what you are being told is correct, but since you can't prove conclusively that it isn't untrue you are giving the benefit of the doubt. Example: A friend says they can't meet with you at the movies because she has to spend time with her family that night. You don't believe her, you suspect she's going to a party. But you check their Facebook and anywhere else you know they go online and they make no posts until sometime the next day. So you are giving her the benefit of the doubt that she did indeed spend time with her family

Regard someone as innocent until proven otherwise; lean toward a favorable view of someone. For example, Let's give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that she's right.

Give the benefit of the doubt means to give the person a chance and sort of look past his shortcomings for a minute and see what he is capable of.

There is someone accused in doing something. But there is no proof that he/she has done the thing. In that event if he/she is let off the charge of doing it is called giving him/her the benefit of doubt. i.e. He/she may or may not have done that thing but there is nothing to prove that he/she has done it.

Whan you cannot prove something as being correct or incorrect you have to give the benefit of the doubt to an observation or action being questioned. That means you treat it as correct until it can be proved otherwise.
